help! find reach, match, safety. please!

@ teenage_cliche thanks for introducing me to smith. however im not interested in women’s colleges

im considering temple as my safety.

Well good, I’m glad.

help in cutting down the list please?
also update on ap score can be found in post 20

Although I think you have a good chance at many of the schools on your list, I think most of them are reaches for anybody!

I would reduce the above list to your top 6 favorites and add 2 matches and 2 safeties.

For engineering consider RPI, Bucknell, Lehigh, U Of Rochester. All are top ranked.

I agree with others that is is too top heavy. Let me see:
Reaches
cornell
cooper union
caltech
mit
uc berkeley
columbia
john hopkins
stanford
harvard
williams college
u of chicago
washington u in st.louis
northwestern

I think you should only pick 2 or 3 from the above list

Match:
carnegie mellon
binghamton

You could add Case Western, Rochester, Brandeis, Wisconsin, GW, UC Irving, UC Davis (assuming that you are California resident)

Safety:
Another UC school, Clark University, Vermont

Hope this will help. :)

OP is not from CA. Don’t bother applying for another UC since you need FA - you won’t get any. Vermont costs $40K for OOS and their top OOS scholarship is $10K. I would drop that. I would definitely look at another SUNY.

Yep, SUNY is a good buy. Stony Brook and Buffalo should be your safeties for engineering.

i have a question:
im a resident of ny
i know that i can get fa in suny. but does the same apply for private ny colleges, say cornell?
if i apply for a college out of state, will i get ANY financial aid? loan? school scholarship? grant?
say if i apply to schools in mass. / cal / penn ?

You should get FA at private schools OOS (or in-state for that matter), but unless your stats are stellar you probably won’t get any at public OOS schools. Some large OOS schools have specific scholarships to lure high performing students to their schools to bring up the student body academic performance. The UCs are not in that group right now with their budget issues.

Take your list, make a big spread sheet and go over the details of each school. Does it have the majors you’re considering? What are the plusses and minuses of each school - academically, socially, location-wise? What is their financial aid like? Do they have merit scholarships? How much of the FA is loans?

Talk to your parents about how much they are willing to contribute to your education. If you need a lot of aid, that has to be your number one priority. If you are considering taking loans, set a limit for how much you are willing to take on.

Take a look at Alfred University in NY with your stats its a financial safety as well as an admissions safety. Cooper Union has engineering but is quite quirky. Cooper is a super financial safety but difficult selectivity. It has a name that is widely recognized.

well ppl 've been saying to me to not consider financial problems as a factor in selecting colleges?

Pratt’s architecture program waives the portfolio if your GPA is 3.7+. Just btw. =)

I wonder why no one included the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor on their lists for great engineering schools. They have a 42.1% acceptance rate and I think you would be a match for the university with the stats that you have listed. This year for the class of 2009 they had a 49.8% acceptance rate (economic crisis). I think you should include this in your list because:

Ann Arbor is rated one of the best college towns
Distinguished engineering department
3rd largest research university in the nation.

I know you are looking for schools in the northeast or west, but give Michigan a well deserved look.

should i take the toefl?
i speak a different language at home.
been in the states for seven years though.

also if i apply to schools in the west coast… i have insurance now
if i get sick there, will i be able to get medical insurance? going to the doctor costs a lot money if you don’t have insurance…

@ morrismm
how would i explain my verbal and writing scores?
will they provide space for explaination in the application or do i need to attach a note to the app?

Erin’s Dad mentioned RPI (Rensselaer) way back at the start of this thread. You should really take a look at it. They give plenty of scholarships, and have excellent engineering and architecture programs.
Plus, this is a new building on campus- really cool: [About: EMPAC - experimental media and performing arts center - troy, ny usa](About | Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC))

You don’t see this very often:

I’m a girl
800 math

Look for the engineering-oriented schools like RPI, Worcester Tech, Georgia Tech, Lehigh, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Clarkson that have many more males than females…they are usually very eager to accept and generous with the financial aid when there’s a female who can crunch the numbers as well as any of the guys.
