Hi, I'm a rising senior and I've been picking and choosing schools to go to for a long time now. I have a list of schools together, but I'm worried about not having any safeties and am afraid that I'll be putting a huge financial burden on myself if I go to huge out of state schools. I'd say I'm a pretty good student, but I just want to make sure I'm being realistic with my goals.

A few things have changed since then like my 33 on the ACT, 760 on Math II and 690 on US History, along with a suspension I got because of an alcohol related incident. Can anyone recommend some safeties or schools that offer decent financial aid? My family makes less than $50k/yr and I'm trying to avoid loans as much as possible. Someone recommended Vanderbilt, but it's pretty difficult to be admitted. Thanks in advance!

For safety candidates, take a look at this list, since your stats will make you eligible for many of the full rides and full tuition scholarships:

Also take a look at various Georgia publics, perhaps with HOPE scholarships and other in-state aid.

In general, for need-based financial aid, try the net price calculator on each school’s web site.

For non-safety candidates, many (not all) of the more selective private schools have good financial aid (again, check the net price calculator). There are also competitive merit scholarships at some schools to try for, listed at:

If you have any National Merit status, see this list also:

With your ACT score and GPA, you could get a scholarship to cover full out of state tuition at the University of Alabama. You could also easily get into the Honors College. That’s where I’m going starting this year, so I can tell you that it’s a great school and I bet you could get more financial aid if you needed it. Also, check out Louisiana State and the University of South Carolina. They have good scholarship packages as well.
