Hi! Im going into my junior year of high school and i’m struggling to find a major. All of freshman year i wanted to be a wildlife biologist. I love animals and I got straight 100s in biology without doing much work or studying, so that seemed an appropriate major. However sophomore year I struggled in chem and managed to pass with a 77. I also took a biotechnology course(wildlife biology is a field in biotechnology) and had a horrible teacher and a horrible experience in that class. I wasnt interested in anything we were learning and it was my least favorite of all my classes. However, i also took AP World History and got high grades all year. I was very interested in the course and loved it. I was wondering if there is any majors that have to do with people/world cultures. My mom insists that the only job for this kind of major would be teaching, is that true?
Major in a language or a region (including Classics), anthropology, geography (human), global/international studies, history, sociology, etc.
Your mother is wrong. Teaching is not the only job for this kind of major. I have seen B.A.'s working with Ringling Brothers being shot out of a cannon, and others testing shark suits for Neptunic. I knew a Latin major who was a midwife for a dairy cow just east of Janesville, Wisconsin. My uncle claims he saw a sociology grad removing chewing gum from the sidewalks outside Wrigley Field, though he wasn’t sure if the full-timer in question had dental. I also heard there was a highly paid street-performing South Asian Studies concentrator from Brown who spent the better part of one summer standing on her head – but that’s probably because she had an A.B.
