Help finding a school to transfer to.

Hey everybody, I was wondering if anybody knew of any schools either up north or on the west coast that:

Are decent schools for computer science.

Offer a lot of scholarships to bring it down near in-state costs that most people will receive(I know the University of South Carolina does that, but I'm trying to leave South Carolina)

Will transfer all my credits(both taken at Clemson University, and my AP credits(41 AP credits))

Thanks for any input.

To do any type of forecast for scholarships we need to know stats.

Well I had a 1300 SAT and a 30 on the ACT, I don’t have any kind of a goal or anything because all my credits at the moment are AP.

Gpa* not goal

Can you clarify?

Are you still in high school or are you a student at Clemson?

If you are a college student, then getting transfer scholarships that will bring the cost down to instate will be very hard to do.

If you’re still in high school, then you’d have options. You’re not a transfer student if you’re still in high school even if you have some college credits.

Sorry to hear that you are transferring from Clemson :(

I don’t know about scholarships but I would say that these are the schools with the best computer science programs: Carnegie Mellon, UC-Berkeley, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, MIT, Penn State, Purdue, Illinois and Maryland.

Think UC-Berkeley, MIT and Carnegie Mellon are going to be impossible to transfer into for you but take a look at Penn State, or Maryland! (Michigan, Purdue, Illinois are technically in the mid-west but if you count that as the north haha)

What were your grades like in High School?

Virginia Tech is suppose to have very happy students. Great program and the OOS tuition is around 30K. VT does accept AP credits (and I’m sure they accept Clemson credits).

One of my son’s best friends happens to be a first-year at VT in computer science and he says his professors have been excellent. This is coming from a kid that has had his own business going for two yrs. in support (for northern VA school system even!). He loves VT so far.

@mom2collegekids, no I am already at Clemson.

@pierre0913 I applied to MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech(along with Cornell) and nowhere else originally besides Clemson. I set my expectations too high and ended up at a school I don’t like.

Looks like you are interested in a Tech school. Take a look at the other AITU schools (http://http://theaitu.org). Some of them are willing to offer pretty good scholarships to transfer students. As a professor at Illinois Tech, I know that we do. The job placement rate from these schools is good even in these times.

What’s wrong with Clemson?

Minnesota, Cal Poly SLO, and Virginia Tech may be worth a look, as their out of state list price is lower than that of many other schools.

Money is going to be the issue. Many of the good CS schools are public, and you’re not likely to get much from OOS publics.

CSUs like Cal Poly run about $30K for OOS students so that might work. Otherwise look at some privates if you would qualify for need based aid. Union and Lehigh perhaps.

U Southern California fits the bill

USC is not likely to give merit scholarships to a transfer student…especially to bring cost down to instate.

If this student is a first semester frosh, then trying to transfer with an ACT 30 may not be strong enough. USC’s atmosphere is somewhat similar to Clemson’s - from what I’ve experienced when on both campuses.

The student doesn’t say whether he qualifies for a lot of need-based aid.

What do you dislike about Clemson? Do you have scholarships to Clemson? How much do you pay to go there?

“USC is not likely to give merit scholarships to a transfer student.”
Not Correct.
They do offer scholarships to transfer students. and they have an extremely generous FA program

TRANSFER MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS
For entering transfer students only. Selection is based on grade-point average in transferable courses and rigor of courses. Last year’s recipients had an average GPA above 3.7 and had completed more than 30 transferable units at the time their applications were submitted.
