My daughter loves drama/musical theater and wants to be in shows and participate in an active drama community. However, she wants to major in chemical engineering. Does anyone have a suggestion on what college would meet her requirements?
I’m going outside your typical box here. ChemE is a time consuming major and most theater programs are going to require a major time investment as well. The University of Akron has a very well regarded ChemE program especially as it relates to polymers. They also have a Theater minor. I doubt you would be able to double major at most universities as the majors would be in two different colleges within the university each with their own requirements.
Thanks @Ivvcsf I have several friends at work who graduated fro University of Akron. I will look them up and maybe put them on the list to visit this spring/summer.
We have a friend whose daughter is double majoring in Saxophone Performance and Electrical Engineering at the University of Florida. I believe they said that combination would take six years to complete. If you can find an instate school where tuition would be affordable for more than four years, you may find an option like this one. Best of luck to you!
Another suggestion are some of the smaller LACs/Universities that offer engineering (Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh, Union, CWRU). The expectation at those places that offer engineering within a liberal arts context is that students should be able to pursue some other interest/subject matter alongside engineering curriculum. I know at Bucknell the arts merit scholarships for theatre allow an Engineering major and a theatre minor. CWRU has great engineering and strong theatre. The OP didn’t say that the D wants to major or minor in theatre just that she wants to participate in shows/active theatre community while majoring in ChemE. It may be easier to participate in theatre as a non-major at places that offer a BA in theatre rather than a BFA (where roles/opportunities may be more restricted to majors).
My S2 is attending University of Rochester, major in computer engineering, and has enjoyed participating in theater productions. Very easy for non theater majors/minors to audition and participate in several of the drama groups. Engineering school is excellent as well.
http://www.eed.egr.unlv.edu/ might let her combine her interests.
My D is currently a senior at Lafayette College and if you D wants a LAC the school would work great. My D is a science major and will end up with a theater minor as well (the minor is just for fun). Lafayette has a very strong engineering program. As a science major, my D has time to do a lot of research with professors, do well in her classwork/labs and be involved in shows as both an actor and stage manager. No need to be a theater major/minor to be in shows. And as a bonus my D has taken a few theater classes at Lafayette which she has really enjoyed.
