Help finding colleges with good physics/astronomy programs

Hi guys, I’m not sure which safety/mid-range schools I should apply to. I want to study physics or astronomy.
Stats:
SAT: 2390 (2400 superscore)
State: CA
GPA: 3.89 unweighted
AP: 5 so far, 3 more this year
National Merit: most likely yes, got 1500 out of 1520 on PSAT
Cost: not an issue.
I’d prefer colleges that are in cities (and on the east or west coast if possible).
I’m applying to MIT, UC Berkeley, and Caltech as my top choices, and USC and UCLA as mid-range schools, but apart from that, I’m not sure about any safety schools or other medium schools. My counselor said I should pick 8-10, with 2-3 safeties, so I have 4 or 5 slots to fill.
Thank you!

The UC Santa Cruz Astro PhD program is in the top 10, and that would easily be a safety for you.
The UC Santa Barbara Physics PhD program is in the top 10, and that should also be a safety for you.
Might as well apply to UC Irvine and UC Davis too.

(I’m assuming you are in-state for California.)

Yeah, I’m in-state CA. Do you have any suggestions for medium-tier colleges?

As I said, UC Irvine and Davis have excellent physics.

Rensselaer.
