Help finding Sailing schools

OK, since we're in the "down" season thought I'd get a jump on the threads. Girlfriend needs a sailing (team) college for D. Nationally ranked sailor (female in case you read over the D). 3.8 uw GPA, AP classes, good student, dont' know ACT scores. Family will not qualify for aid...but have already put 2 through and have 1 in college so merit possibilities would be good as college funds are depleting. They are already exploring College of Charleston and I thought about Hobart and the University of Wisconsin...what else is out there to explore? Anything in California? Region does not matter. Small is better than gigantic uni, but inbetween size (10 - 15,000) is OK. She asked for my help so I turn to the best here on the forum...

College of Saint Mary in Maryland is top notch in sailing:

SMCM Wins National Sailing Team Racing ChampionshipSailing winners
St. Mary’s surpassed the nation’s top 14 sailing schools to win the 2010 ICSA/APS Team Race National Championships on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. The Seahawks lost this championship on a tie breaker last year, but came back to win this year on another tie break with the same team - Boston College. The win marks the fifth time the Seahawks have clinched this unique championship. The College came in 8th in the ICSA Women’s National Championships and 4th in the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy Championships. Sara-Morgan Watters '10 was named an All-American Skipper.

I was going to say Boston College; you can see it is mentioned in the paragraph above.

About the College of Charleston, your friend my already know this - SC state schools offer merit aid based on SAT scores. I don’t remember the cut offs, but a good SAT score can bring the cost of Charleston to an in-state price.

Nice…she’ll like this one to explore. Madison is, of course, well known for the midwest (and Lake Mendota). I also expect this young lady to want to spread her wings and leave the region (like her bros.)

There’s the California Maritime Academy which is part of the Cal State system

Reach: Harvard U.
Match: Boston College
Safety: Boston University

All three have really strong teams. Plus, Boston is a great college town.

I agree with guillaume:

College of Saint Mary in Maryland. Fabulous team. Beautiful location. Team with lots of camaraderie.

I seem to recall that Hobart and William Smith has a sailing team.

Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia has been a women’s sailing powerhouse for a long time. The current Rolex Yachtswoman of the year, Anna Tunnicliffe, who is also a gold medal olympian, sailed for Old Dominion. With this student’s grades, it looks like she’d be a lock for honors college and merit aid.

Wow Old Dominion…that’s a college I haven’t heard in a while. This is turning into a very good list to start exploring.

The United States Naval Academy has intercollegiate and offshore co-ed sailing teams.

Northwestern, with the sailing facility right on campus on Lake Michigan.

Eckerd in St. Pete could be a safety.

We know a boy who is a nationally ranked sailor and is going to Tufts.

US Coast Guard Academy

I second ODU. They’ve won several sailing national championships, the campus is right on the Elizabeth River. ODU is always near the top in sailing and pretty good in women’s basketball, soccer and mens basketball too.

U.S.N.A. has a pretty sweet sailing budget and St. Mary’s in Maryland is a truly beautiful place. (Some pretty cool archeological digs there too.)

Washington College in Chestertown, MD. A nifty little school with a decent varsity sailing team and nice facilities on the Chester River.

I’d just like to note that St. Mary’s in Maryland is a state school–it’s an excellent value.
