So, I'm looking for scholarships/contests based off of merit or skill, not financial need. I'm hoping to at least try to get a little more money to help pay for my college (I'll be entering as a freshman next year). I'm not looking for big scholarships, I know that the big ones come from the college usually. I have a pretty good GPA (weighted 4.24, unweighted 3.98), I have over 1,000 hours of community services with various groups, I can write, sew, draw and paint relatively proficiently, I've taken AP, dual- and co-enrollment courses, I'm in NHS and NAHS, but based on the FAFSA, pretty much no financial need. Any suggestions for scholarships or where to look for them? I'm already on Fastweb, but it seems that there aren't very many this time of year.

Has school already ended in your area? It’s local scholarship time where I live and these are relatively easy to find. Let your GC know that you are actively searching! My D ended up with a few “surprise” awards last year, including one where she was the only person nominated (by a teacher she knew) on the very last day because guidance had forgotten about it! These “surprises” gave her a $2,500 cushion…

Fastweb.com might also help, and if your school subscribes to Naviance you can get one of those too!

Naviance gives scholarships? I’d be interested in hearing more about this.

It doesn’t give scholarships, but many scholarship opportunities are posted on the Naviance website for the schools. I have used it to help students find local scholarships offered by community organizations (as well as those larger McDonalds’-type scholarships).

What is your situation? How much is your school’s COA? How much can your parents pay?

Did you apply to any schools that are affordable and/or that has awarded you any merit scholarships?

Outside scholarships are often small and for one year only. What will you do for subsequent years?

Hi SewKate, you’re right about the fact that this time of year doesn’t offer quite as many scholarships as there are earlier in the year. There are a couple places you might want to look that list scholarships that are still available:
