Help finding school w/ low GPA

I have a 2.7 GPA on 4.00 scale and a 24 on the ACT.
I have applied at University of Wisconsin at Madison, Platteville, and Milwaukee.
I have also applied at MSOE Milwaukee school of engineering.

All schools wouldn't accept me so I decided to look out of state but I need some help finding a school that accepts low marks for electrical engineering/ computer engineering majors.

Is that your weighted GPA?

Is that your GPA for all classes (including PE and electives). The reason I’m asking is that some schools will use the GPA for all classes. Some are very generous and use the weighted GPA for ALL classes.

Is money no object?

Seems early to have decisions from all 4 schools. Not surprised Madison would deny. Class rank? Did you take any honors or AP classes? All the required math, science, english, social studies etc.? Anything else you’re not telling us? Are finances an issue?

Consider looking at public universities in Minnesota like Mankato or Winona. Minnesota and Wisconsin have reciprocity for in-state tuition.

Ya money is an issue.

Class rank: 172 out of 340.

as for how the GPA is weighted I am not sure sorry.

I did take Honors Algebra, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, AP Calc, AP Psych, Honors Geometry, Honors English 9 and Honors English 10.

look at Rowan University in New Jersey, they have a great engineering program and it shouldn’t be too hard to get accepted there.

Just out of the top 50%. I’m a little surprised at Platteville and Milwaukee. What was your math ACT? Seems to be important to them. You may need to apply pre-engineering rather than applying directly to the engineering schools and build up your GPA in college.

I had a 26 on math act.

If money is an issue, then applying to OOS publics is probably not a good thing for you because they will be unaffordable - except with states that have reciprocity like Minn & Wisconsin. Privates may also be unaffordable.

What is your family’s EFC? and can they pay their EFC?

Also, did you know that financial aid is usually student loans - unless your families income is very low.

um, our calculated EFC was 0. I’m not sure what you mean by paying their EFC.

ya OOS is pretty expensive. I think I will apply to UW Rock County. They have a partnership with UW Platteville in Engineering. I don’t know how good UW Rock County school is though =/ and I really wanted to stay on campus somewhere. :(

Ok…so your EFC is 0…so that means your parents won’t have an EFC to pay.

you’ll get “some” grant money (what is the max?? Anyone???), but mostly you’ll get offered student loans and some work/study money (mostly for spending money).

Do you want to graduate owing $60k or more in student loans?

You need to apply to a financial safety in case your F/A packages are mostly all student loans with a small grant that won’t cover much.

Many kids in WI start out at the UW colleges to save up for transfer. Even though you can apparently get EE entirely at Rock County, you may want to try to swing a transfer to Platteville at some point.

Also, I’m really surprised now that you couldn’t at least get into Platteville pre-engineering. Did you do a decent job on your app statements? Would your GC not have written something decent? You may want to try emailing your admissions counselor to try to find out what’s up.

Actually I think my app statement was pretty bad. Today I applied again to UW Platteville and rewrote the app statement. I doubt it will change anything.

Ugh and I don’t think I can go to UW Rock County. It is an hour an 20 minute drive from my home and I have to share a car with my sister. The only local community college I have is Gateway :(

btw, what is a financial safety?

A school you and your parents can afford to pay for with only a reasonable amount of debt. Can your parents afford to contribute anything despite the 0 EFC? Are you working and do you have any money saved?

Is your sister in college, or is she in high school?

Will you be needing to share the car in a way that she’ll also need it during the day (to get to school or job)?

Personally, I don’t like the idea of a student having to share a car as the only means to get to and from school (especially if we’re talking about 2 different schools). Some time back there was a thread about something like that, and kids not being able to get to class because a family member had the car.

If you are low income (don’t know your family income) and you’ll be majoring in a math/science type of field, I think there is another federal grant that you qualify for. Does anyone know which one I’m talking about? This would be in additon to a Pell Grant. It may be called a Smart grant or something totally different (having a senior moment right now…LOL)

No my parents can’t contribute anything, I’m working part time, nothing saved.

ya my sister is still in high school, i take her to school and pick her up everday.

I found out Waukesha County Tech had an engineering program that transfers to four year colleges but it is an hour drive too :(

Ok…it is the Smart Grant…but it looks like it’s only for juniors and seniors.

[Student Aid on the Web](http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/SmartGrants.jsp?tab=funding)

You need to talk to a college financial advisor to find out exactly which grants you’ll likely qualify for.

If you qualify for the Pell and (later) the Smart, you’ll be in better shape.

Again…I don’t like the idea of you having to be the transportation for your sister.

As an Engineering major, you will have afternoon labs and classes. You won’t be able to take your sister home. And, you also might not have time to take her in the morning either if you have to drive any distance.

I have a son who’s an Eng major…There are several days that he’s in class until late afternoon with labs (MANY classes these days have some kind of lab time)

I would rather find a situation where you can live on campus and not have the distraction of family responsibilities.

Ya I want to live on campus but I don’t think I will be able too. I will have to wait a year unless I do something online.
