We need a bit more info. GPA weighted or unweighted? AP courses?

Assuming the GPA is UW, he should be fine with that list. If weighted, Tulane will be a reach, based on current admissions stats. Others should still be OK. I am also assuming based on the list that he doesn’t want really large schools.

Is that his weighted gpa? If he wants an artsy environment New Paltz would be the way to go. My son is a student there after transferring from UMiami. He also got into Marist and Tulane out of HS and visited both. He didn’t feel Marist was a good fit since he saw mostly jocks and more of a homogeneous population…not artsy at all. He liked Tulane, but New Orleans was still recovering from Katrina and I wasn’t too happy with such a rowdy town as his college playground. New Paltz is a really good mix of different types of people, a down to earth and friendly environment. He is an art major and we have seen him grow as an artist at New Paltz. We are also from LI, and its a good location…not too close and not too far, but easy to come home for the occasional weekend or hit up NYC.

no ap courses
gpa is unweighted.

it could b a large school for sure ,as long as its close to a major city .

OK, with that unweighted GPA I think his chances are good at Tulane, excellent everywhere else. The lack of AP’s might hurt him at Tulane, unless he is taking 3 or so next year. Then he will be OK.

I understand LilyMoon’s apprehension since that was so much sooner after Katrina. But my D is a freshman at Tulane now and while there is plenty to do still, the city operates normally and I would not characterize it as rowdy, lol. At least no rowdier than before, and probably less so. It is a pretty normal college atmosphere in that regard. In other words, crazy sometimes, normal most times. She loves New Orleans and is extremely pleased with the school. And btw, she is a Creative Writing/China Studies double major.

I think he would like new paltz and be happy there, but i think he can get into a much better school and maybe get some scholarship money and bring the cost down close a suny school and still be happy at that school.do sunys give any money to a student like him ?

My son had similar SAT scores but a higher gpa and lots of AP’s and wasn’t offered a scholarship at New Paltz, Tulane or Marist. He got a scholarship offer at Albany. Didn’t apply to any of the other SUNY’s.

you a wealth of info thank you !! if he gets his sat score to say 2020 do u think he has a chance at getting money from some schools he is takin sats again that was his first with, no tutor so i hope that will help him .

New Paltz might be a good fit. As a male, he should be accepted…but women outnumber men 2:1.

lsd87 - And the downside of that for him is…???

what doeas early action mean for new paltz ?

I’m applying Early Action. What can I expect?
Students applying Early Action must have a complete application in the Office of Undergraduate Admission by November 15.
If you take the October 10, 2009 SAT or the September 12, 2009 or October 24, 2009 ACT and wish these scores to be part of your Early Action application, please contact the testing services to rush deliver the scores to New Paltz.

Early Action will result in one of three admission decisions:
Accept
Deny
Roll-over to regular admission-applicants will be notified of this decision by January 1.

just got sats back and they went down ! he was sick
