Help for a friend.

So I have a friend with an impossible mother and I was wondering if she had any options available.

She is trying to go to school this fall at a local CC, but it starts in a week and she hasn't been able to register. She got her FAFSA information and all that done a while ago, but got selected for verification. Now, her mom refuses to fax her tax forms. Her mom keeps telling her she'll do it tomorrow and basically thinks she knows everything because she works at another school in the transfer department. Now, classes are starting in a week and her mom still refuses to do anything.

I know there's probably nothing that can be done, but it just sucks because she did really poorly throughout high school and then worked her butt off last year by going to night classes as well regular day classes to do two years of high school at once so that she could graduate with her class. Now, the only thing that's stopping her is an ignorant mom who basically doesn't want her daughter to ever leave the house.

Her family members have all tried to tell her mom to get the tax forms in, but it doesn't help. She can't go to her dad either (he's in prison for life) so she has no one else to turn to.

Thanks all.

Unfortunately, she probably can’t do anything but keep bugging mom. She could go talk to the financial aid folks, but I really doubt it will help. Parents like hers don’t deserve the label “parent.”

That’s what I figured. It was worth a try though.

You have absolutely no idea how true that statement is.

While I usually wouldn’t advocate sneaking…could the child find the parents tax return and send it over without the mother’s assistance?? This might “speed” the process along and avoid the avoidance of the mother.

Especially if it’s on the computer (like in a Turbotax file) …

Still has to be signed if it’s a printout. We’ve actually had a school send back the tax return and ask for a new copy, because I printed out the Turbotax file but neglected to sign it.

Of course, I don’t know how a school would know if the signature wasn’t the mother’s…

There is no computer in the house, so it was done on paper. They just moved and the mom has all of her files under lock and key. Her mom is VERY secretive.

She has tried to look, but they move fairly often and most of her house is in boxes.

The best we’ve come up with so far is that she stays on her mom and takes late-starting classes.

OK, naive question, but how did your friend get the info for the FAFSA to begin with? Was she not working with a completed income tax return? Was it just estimated? (Note to future applicants: always work from the hard copy, photo copy it and save it in a file AWAITING verification !!!)

Community college is not super expensive. Perhaps there’s an avenue at the college for emergency loan for first sem. and a kind Fin Aid worker who will help stalk mom? It would be worth a try.

Also, just b/c there’s no computer in the house didn’t mean mom didn’t have it filed electronically by a friend or tax preparer. Worth investigation if your friend happens to know mom’s fav passwords and soc. # Not that I’d suggest such subterfuge, normally
: P
Good luck.

Her mom completed the FAFSA without her, because her mom didn’t want her to see her taxes.

She doesn’t know her mom’s SSN. Like I said, very secretive mom.

And it’s about $1500 a semester for classes and books and everything. She can’t even take out Stafford loans unless you file a FAFSA and there’s no one to cosign an outside loan.

The good news is, her mom CLAIMS she sent in the forms on Monday (who knows). So we’re waiting and seeing if it goes through or not :/.
