HELP! For all who got into an Ivy University!

Ok, Im freaking out if I should go all the way up to AP Calc BC. At my school, at my school you need AP Calc AB for BC and the way im going, ill only be able to take AB senior year. I can take Pre Calc over the Summer next year so I can take AB Junior and BC Senior year. So, how many of you that got admitted, how may of you took BC? How many only took just AB? HELP!!!

my school got plenty of kids into ivies this year. Some had AP BC. Some only had AP AB. One girl (non-legacy, white, non-first generation, so like no hooks whatsoever) got into Brown with AP AB. So basically, colleges aren’t going to freak.

No Ivy league is going to expect you to take Pre-Calc over the summer so you can do AP AB Junior year. I would actually highly recommend you don’t. Math is all about building, and if you rush through pre-calc and don’t learn it properly, AP AB will be pretty terrible.

Further, colleges want to see that you took the most rigorous courseload for your school. If you are taking the most rigorous classes you currently can at your school (and can handle), you will be completely fine. Chill.

You are evaluated in the context of your environment. If you’re not set up to take BC based on the math track you’re on, you’ll be fine. The two kids at my school accepted to Columbia are in AB as seniors (though both are humanities-minded), with the BC-ers rejected from their top Ivies. This will not be a deciding issue either way.

Do it if you can. Do anything to give yourself an edge.

whoa, wait a second. no Ivy League will EXPECT anyone to take Pre-Calc over the summer, but waiting until Junior year to take Pre-Calc is pretty rare for kids at my school. I had a lot of friends who took Pre-Calc over the summer before Sophomore year.

what i’m trying to say is that if you think you can take Pre-Calc over the summer (at my school it’s a four-week program. don’t know how long yours is), then by all means do it. but that’s only if you can handle it because taking it over the summer is intense. you do have a lot to digest. but if you do, you will give yourself an edge.

also remember to have a well-rounded application too, because as glassesarechic said, math will not be a deciding factor in college admissions, especially if you’re humanities-minded.

See if your school will place you into AB junior year if you take pre-calc online. There are much better ways to use your summer, and taking the class online won’t conflict with your schedule because you can work on it whenever you want :)

Ok, if you want to go into a math-based major, than consider doing it. But if you don’t, I really doubt it will make much of a difference if you take pre-calc over the summer. Do something you find interesting and want to do, rather than doing something just because you think it’ll help you get into college. Most ivies would prefer to see the former.

Precalc isn’t really that hard. It’s just like Algebra II, but a little more in depth into everything. I’d do it.
