Help for An Academic Actress

Hi guys. I'm posting here, once again, becuase of all the helpful advice I've recieved. I asked about acting with academics, and found my two favorite schools. I asked about BAs in Theatre and got some good help. But I'm at a real impasse and need some help...

I found two top notch academic schools I loved over the summer- Northwestern and Boston U. They're currently my top picks, due to 1) strong academics, 2) strong theatre, 3) urban campus (or close to urban). My shots of getting into either are 50/50, BU due to the audition, Northwestern due to a slight reach.

I then learned a few months ago that I was a National Merit Semifinalist. Of course, it's extremely exciting, and it was great! And then all the mail started pouring in with scholarship offers... full rides, mostly full rides, the works. The problem was they didn't have theatre programs, or not strong ones. Their academics were great, but when I want to pursue theatre, thats a problem.

I had backups, and then visited and hated them, so they went off the list. The only schools left are my safety close to home, NU, and BU. That's not acceptable- I need to apply to some schools I could definatly get into and would be happy in. I also need to find some that offer good merit aid, especially if NMS (hopefully finalist) helps.

Basically, what I need the most help with is-
1) Nonconservatory style (or limited)- The problem with BU
2) Merit aid- the problem with Northwestern
3) Urban or suburban campus
4) Strong theatre programs

If the stats help any, I have a 1340/2010 SAT, 28 (subject to change) ACT, top 10% ranking in competative school, 4.0 W/3.8 UW GPA, and decent-strong ECs, especially in theatre.

Please help. Please.

Since we don't know which schools you looked at as backups and then rejected, it's hard to advise. Even Northwestern and BU are very different schools. Northwestern is much more competitive academically and has more of a campus, just for starters. So maybe if you could give us an idea of where you have looked, and why you didn't like certain schools others here could be of more help.

K.

Northwestern- Loved it for suburban campus (gorgeous!); strong theatre program, very strong academics, good "feel"- not too cold and studying, but warmer than that; Theatre program still leaves time for other studies; major downside was no merit finacial aid (my family would qualify for a little of the need based, but not much).

Boston U- Loved for urban campus (just enough feel of a campus- any less, NYU style, and I'm not interested), very good, if not great, academics; terrific Theatre Arts program that leaves some time for my interest in Arts Admin.; "feel" was also good; downside is the highly competative audition.

U of Chicago- Didn't like at all- Campus was nice, classes seemed good, seemed very good academically, but their theatre program sent horrible vibes off; wouldn't qualify for merit aid; was a "second choice" on my list until the visit; students didn't seem to be very social at all

NYU- visited during summer, so may be slightly off- had been my dream school for a long time- but then I visited. Didn't feel like any sort of campus whatsoever; students seemed to be more unfriendly, good programs, good academics, but the feel just wasn't what I wanted it to be.

I hope that helps...
