A dear friend's son who is a very talented baritone needs a new program because his college is going bankrupt (!) I don't know much about voice programs. He thinks he may not survive midwest winters (a California kid), but can tolerate New England winters. What are the good programs out there and, if no one accepts late applications, what can he do for a year?
Thanks a million! He's a great kid and I'd like to help him!

Most app and audition deadlines are past, but here’s a few threads with vocal performance schools

There’s a rolling admissions thread on one of the other forums, and maybe cross referencing potential choices on there against vp schools, he might be able to come up with a few choices.

It’s late in the game, and he may not have many options. Points to consider:

a. potentially call a school or two of choice, explain, and see if they will make some special consideration given the circumstance.

b. ask current instructor if they have any faculty peers in suitable institutions who might be amenable to aiding the process. Sometimes a call from a noted instructor may help grease the wheels. It is contingent on school policy, “pull” of the department/faculty, and more importantly talent level of the student and needs of the program.

c. potentially applying at a school of choice, and asking to audition into the program the next semester or following cycle. Again, caveats applicable in b. will apply here as well.

d. take a gap year, study privately, and pick up academic requirements at a cc.

He’s got hisw work cut out. Much to do, and little or no time. The only upside I see potentially is a discharge of federal loans if a school closes or folds. I recall reading this somewhere, but don’t recall specifics.

Good luck.

Re: Midwest winters vs. New England winters, I don’t think he’ll find Januarys in places like Ann Arbor, Cincinnati, or Oberlin to be much worse than he’d see in Boston. Now, Bloomington, MN or St. Olaf’s? Those could be a little more challanging.

Perhaps he has some connections with his choral director who might make some calls about where he could still go for next year. Most college choir directors know all about what the department or music school needs and lacks in voice types. Good luck.

I have heard great things about Dr. Jeffrey Snider at University of North Texas. He is a very dedicated teacher and approachable (he is also head of the Vocal Dept and a baritone as well). My suggestion is that he contact Jeff Snider and explain the situation…you never know. Even if it’s too late for UNT for next fall, Dr. Snider might have some good suggestions on how to proceed.

Try Anderson University in Anderson, IN. A little north of Indanapolis. They are a small christian college. I was impressed with the voice teacher. I think they are a hidden gem.

You guys are awesome. Thank you!!! Anderson sounds right up the family’s alley!

Message got cut off…Yes, Don…agree with you regarding the winters:) Thanks for the links Violadad! I will also recommend UNT…that sounds great too!!! Many, many thanks!!!

What about Westminster Choir College? They indicate that they have rolling admissions. The application dates are merely “recommended.”

Yeah, Anderson University has a great music department. I’m actually going to major in art there, but I think I’m also going to go for a minor in music management. They have very talented musicians there.
