Help for college selection

So I have been accepted to ASU for CS.
International Student
Pros of ASU
Great program with research
Great alumini network and jobs
No 1 upcoming univs
Blah blah

I have also applied to Purdue for CS

Now I want to apply to fewer colleges than initially planned need some help in that.what are your inputs
1.Penn state
3.Tamu
4.UT AUSTIN
5.Purdue
6.Rutgers
7.UMASS -Amherst
8.Virginia tech
9.NCSU
10 .Sjsu
11 ohio State
12-UW(not direct admission to major)

UW? Washington does admit some directly but not many and about 1/3rd of the remaining seem to get in. Wisconsin doesn’t seem to be a problem to advance to the major after a few preliminary classes, from what I have read. Both good but I would take Seattle off the list.

If you will be satisfied with ASU, only apply to colleges that you prefer over it and you are set.

Number one question for all college applicants: what can you and your family afford to spend?

International students won’t get aid from most colleges. Here are the few that have provided aid in the past:

http://www.educationusa.info/financial-aid.php

http://www.desperateguide.com/us/top-25-financial-aid-colleges-in-us-for-international-students-need-aware

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/2013/09/19/colleges-that-give-international-students-the-most-financial-aid

Will you need aid and will the schools on your list provide it, OP?

No I wouldn’t be needing aid at the college’s listed and UW is university of Washington.

Want to apply to programs which are actually better like Purdue which I have applied to.

Few of these would be at the top of my list for CS, but as long as the facilities are very good I don’t think it matters much at the Top 200 schools. At the top I’d have UW, Texas and UMass, but Virginia Tech, San Jose State, and Rutgers have good reputations in CS. It’s only u/g; it’s more about what YOU do than where you do it.

If you can’t get in directly at UWA, don’t bother, it’s extremely competitive.
Virginia Tech, SJSU, NCSU, and UMass Amherst would be my picks.
Did you get into ASU Barrett, or are you applying?

As I am an international i can’t get admission direct at UW CS. I have applied to barett and have a strong chance of getting in.

Are all these schools within budget?

I think ASU BArrett, Virginia Tech, SJSU, NCSU, Umass Amherst form a good list for someone interested in CS.
You may want to add Purdue and Penn State for the business fairs/recruiting, or UT Austin for the cool city and excellent programs.
If your odds are high at Barrett, then you’d likely get into UWA, but CS is SO competitive it’s really a HUGE risk you wouldn’t be able to study CS…

Yes i know it’s a huge risk and yes this school are within my budget but ASU. Is the most affordable…Can you pls tell which I should eliminate?..I have already applied to Purdue

Considering your budget, I would also apply to Santa Clara. You’d likely get a small scholarship that would bring it to within budget and it’s really excellent for CS.

3, 6, 11, 12 = eliminate

Which programs are really better than ASU other than Purdue? Because ASU has great Alumini network

And secondly how is SJSU as a university overall other than its locarion advantage because research is zero there so professors wouldn’t be world class and I have heard Infra is not good

SJSU outside of CS is not very good - not bad, but very easy, and I don’t think they have an Honors College. So, if you can’t get into CS, it’s not really worth it.

Penn State has allegedly the best alumni network in the US. Purdue also but I think the location is less ideal both the town and the places you can go from there (but lots of recruiting on campus).

Overall sjsu not that good, hard to get into classes. I would take it off.

Ha I would easily get in CS at Sjsu but I was thinking on same lines…okay I will apply to a Penn State but if I get in Barett which one should I choose penn sate or ASU …

I guess if I am accepted to Purdue its a no brainer …so you recommend applying to Penn state any other you recommend above ASU

I’m not sure Purdue is a no-brainer vs. Penn State and ASU. I’d pick Penn State over Purdue, certainly.

Oh is it …okay k will consider it but isn’t CS better at Purdue? Any other univ you recommend

I’m thinking of the other factors (since you’ll only take about 1/3 to 1/2 of your classes in CS): town, male/female ratio, possibilities to travel easily to big cities for visits, variety of majors and profiles…
A really “big” Midwestern university for CS would be UIUC but it’s very hard to get into.

UIUC OUT Of my range I am most probably looking from list I have posted as I have done thorough research

I’d pick PSU over these other two because of the same reasons you eliminate sjsu: PSU has many many strengths.
