Help for D's Musical Theater audition

Hi there. We are looking for help in selecting a piece for D's song for her MT audition at Thespian Festival in June. She is a mezzo soprano and wants to belt, use her head voice, etc., to showcase best abilities. Any tips from recent college applicants? Also, just looking for advice about schools, etc. Thanks so much!!!

Okay - Are there particular shows/characters/songs that she feels most comfortble with?
I’m going back long ways…but my first thought is to think of musical leads/supporting leads that required that sort of voice. And I"m assuming you are talking a strong alto.

Here are my initial (off the top of my head and after 2 glasses of wine  ) thoughts -

Once Upon a Mattress - Princess Winifred is a great alto role with some fun songs. I used “Happily Ever After” as an audition piece for years. “The Swamps of Home” and “Shy” are great songs - but kind of need other people around.

Grease - anything by Rizzo. “Sandra Dee” was another of my fav audition pieces.

Cabaret - the songs by Sally Bowles are good. But I would go with “Please, sir, don’t tell Mama” rather than “Caberet.”

Oklahoma - Ado Annie’s “Can’t Say No” if great.

Bells are Ringing - “Just in Time” is a classic.

PS - I was going to be a musical theatre major. Scared the daylights out of my mom (who was also a great singer/actress) and she was tickled pink when I decided to study geology!!! So…MT majors still have a special place in my heart!!!

A Chorus Line- “Nothing”

jkjk
(but take a listen if you’re in a light-hearted mood, i honestly love the song)

“Let’s Hear it for the Boy” from Footloose.
