Help!! For "good" deferal letter

I got one of the "good" deferal letter. (The one they tell you to send in your first sememster senior year grades).

But the problem is I kind of screwed up by getting a C+ in my Calc BC class. Will this screw me over? Am I done?

Any response is appreciated.

Thanks!!

I just got my deferred letter today, but I heard that everyone is being deferred even though they "resumed admissions" on Jan. 10. So, in essence, they're stalling?

Stats: 3.5 U Mich GPA (straight A's sophomore, pretty much straight B's junior year, so a downward slope, even though I took four AP classes junior year and 1 sophomore year), 34 ACT, 2130 SAT (800 W), 800 SAT II Lit, 660 SAT II Math I, sister goes there, South Asian (Indian), OOS

I was bummed b/c I thought it was my GPA that screwed me, but they said to send my senior year grades (five AP classes, pretty much all B's) so that's a "good" deferral letter? What is this all about? I don't know if that makes sense to defer people after already postponing decisions for a month...

Haha, I can't believe I might end up going to Ohio State. It is ridiculous that I couldn't get into Michigan...

wait what's a bad deferral letter?

...where they don't tell you to send your first semester grades

Good deferral letter:

January 19, 2007

Dear Mr. ______,

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for the Fall 2007 term. Your application has received an individualized and comprehensive evaluation and has been deferred for a final decision until a later date. Your application will be re-evaluated on a regular basis, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year's freshman applicant pool.

We expect to receive more than 25,000 application from first-year applicants for a class of about 5,400. This requires us to use a very selective process to manage our enrollment. All admissions decisions will be made no later than mid-April, 2007. If a final decision is not made on your application prior to competion of your fall semester grades, please ask your high school counselor to forward the grades when they are available. Strong fall semester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants.

If you are offered admission prior to completing your fall grades, it is your responsibility to academically perform at the same high standard as you did in your 10th and 11th grade classes. A decline in grades during your senior year could put at risk your opportunity to enroll as a freshman.

Please refer to the enclosed "Questions and Answers About the Admission Process" for more information. We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,

(signed)

Ok first of all, Michigan isn't as easy as you think it is to get into. Your OOS which makes competition much harder. Even if your in-state, a 3.5 + 34 in no shoe-in. My friend just got deferred instate with a 3.7 + 33 so...

Secondly, I don't know if that necessarily the good-deferral letter, cause I haven't seen a "bad" one yet. I think it's a myth between good/bad deferral letters...

That's kind of weird honestly; my friend applied pretty late, 3.5 and a 30 and got in. Only EC was Orchestra and Latin Club.

People at my school got in with relatively high umich GPAs via easy classes and low ACTs (25 range)

same with my school! people who took easy, regular pace honors classes and got straight A's were accepted into Mich easily! gosh, that sickens me, ***

Sometimes people get unlucky. I was deferred 3.6 + 32 with a good # of APs, amazing ECs, in-state, legacy, applied late sept, deferred mid-nov, accepted mid-dec)

Plus, I don't really care if a few unqualified students get in. If they go to UM they won't do well anyways, and plus, if you have a bunch of them in your class and your class is curved...all the better for you :P

does Micorsoft have a big presense at U MICH? I interned there and got 2 recs (one from my boss and one from a U Mich Alumni) so im hoping that will help me out

I guess I got a "good" deferral letter. I have no clue how that happened. Did alot of people get differed, because my grades are not deferral worthy.

I took the basic college required courses with 1 AP and a "honors" Physics course Junior Year
So... then are they just deferring everyone until they can get through apps?

And would these fall grades break me?

The way admissions seems,at least from my experience, is that Umich uses computerized formulas, etc. That is why the real bright people get screwed out of a lot of things. However, this is a huge state university, so that doesn't mean that every single person is going to be reasonably smart. There WILL be a large number of idiots, just not a lot of them relative to the entire student population. In addition, this number is no higher than any other college. I know some smart kids who haven't gotten a dime as far as scholarships go (36ACT + 12 or so AP classes). That is really weird.

I recall seeing a sheet basically that listed like GPA = some amount of points, act = some amount of points and stuff like that

and you had to hit a certain # of points for an admit or something

a friend of mine linked it... ugh if I have time tonight I'll pull it back up

That sheet was from two-three years ago before the point-system was banned...

My major question is if they are just deferring people due to not having enough time to process applications, or what? Did they just not look at my application and differ for when they had time to go through it...?

No, they aren't deferring people cause they lack the time to process applications ...

A deferral means that they reviewed your application, but could not make a positive decision whether to reject/admit you. They want to see some of the other applicants before making a decision for you.

I see. So I really did get deferred. Wow. I am actually pretty happy that I got deferred, now only if I can get in.....
