Help for my Mom

I have a somewhat unusual situation I need some advice on: I will be going away for college soon, but my mother, who just came down from Ny to live with my grandparents( who I have also been living with the last 3 years) is considering attending the local community college online. The problem is, I'm not sure how she would file her Fafsa; she does not work, but does recieve child support and SSI for my disabled little sister. Does she need to fill out an income tax? She has told me that it is impossible for her to do so without an income; however, I would assume that the child support and SSI would have to be somehow documented.

I did all my financial aid myself, as an independent, but am unsure of how to go about helping her..

She does not have to file an income tax form if she’s not required to by the IRS. She simply files FAFSA as “will not file”. Income from work would be 0, child support is other untaxed income and SS benefits of any type are not reportable unless they are high enough to be taxed (which doesn’t apply to her).
