Help for returning to school

I am going on 23. Right after high school my dad had me sent to college for something I really didn't care for at a crappy school and I ended up leaving there after two and a half years. The school was not credited or anything. My question is I want to go back to school so bad, my dad won't file the fasfa. And I've never paid back the loans from the last time. I need advice!

Your dad not completing the FAFSA is the least of your worries. You will never get another penny of financial aid until you have taken care of the loans from before. It sounds like you may have defaulted on them. Have you been out of school for more than 6 months? If so, have you made payments on your loans? If not, you are in default. You will have to repay the loans back in full or make a certain number of on-time payments before you will be able to receive any federal aid again … and most schools won’t give you any institutional aid if you are not eligible for federal aid.

On the upside, once you clear up the defaulted loans (either paid off in full or something on the order of 6 or 12 months of on-time payments, check for the details) you will NOT need your dad to fill out the FAFSA form. By the time you turn 24 you are an independent student and the FAFSA formulas will be based solely on your own income.

If the school was truly not accredited, then you may also have the luck of being able to apply as an incoming freshman and not even have to mention the other school or send transcripts from the other school. Do a bit of sleuthing or make a few calls to your targeted colleges and find out if they consider your first school accredited and therefore if you are an incoming freshman or a transfer student.
