HELP! Foreign Language Compentency Examination

Does anyone know if you can take an examination during O-week for a different language than the one you learned in high school for a foreign language competency examination? also, if you pass the competency requirement are you exempt from having to take foreign languages at Uchicago?

During O Week you sign up for a placement exam. You do not need to take it in the language you learned in high school. If you've never studied another language, you don't have to take one at all. If it places you in 200 or above, you're set on that part. Then you need to schedule an interview in that language to test your speaking and listening. If you pass that and placed into 200 or above, then you've met the language requirement. (This is different, of course, for a language such as Latin, which wouldn't include tests in speaking or listening.)

Keep in mind that many majors require more advanced study in a language.
