HELP..freaking out..

How do you guys deal with critical reading passages? I know some people say not to read them and go straight to the questions, and others say to read everything carefully. However, neither of these techniques seem to work for me. I got a 560 in reading using the PR strategy of not reading the passages but now i really need to get 600-700 and I don't know what to do..

Which technique works best for you?

anyone?...

Try going to questions first and highlight lines referenced. For ex., "in lines 36-37..." highlight such lines. Then read passage, and when you see something hightlighted you will pay particular attn to it. When you proceed to the questions, you can find the spot in the passage quickly. Some students find success w/ this method. Are you a jr or sr? Also DO NOT FREAK OUT! This will not help!

I am a sr so I don't have time for long term prep. I'm taking it on Saturday and then on Nov. 1 cause my scores have to be sent to my college before Dec 31..

When you say "560" do you mean practice test or previous SAT?

I mean the actual SAT. I took it back in March of my jr year.

You do OK on other 2 sections? Ever take the ACT?

It's pretty weird. On the ACT I got a 32/26/31/24 28 Composite.

My SAT math is pretty high and so is writing so I don't know what to do about reading..

Don't press too much. Everybody would like to score 700, but you can't just will yourself to score well. Pressing too hard and trying to score far above your realistic potential adds too much pressure, making the whole test seem harder.

Don't try to outsmart the CR section. Generally it's not advisable to read the questions first. Keep it simple - skim the passage first, pick out the easy questions and leave the hard ones for the end. The biggest key to success is probably Don't Get Stuck - keep things moving along.

Familiarize yourself with the scale, figure out how many questions you can comfortably skip and still reach your target score. Skip wisely. Be very strict about only eliminating answers you're CERTAIN are incorrect. Give every question your full concentration, answer with confidence and be willing to accept the results. Beyond that, what more can you do? Your future does not depend on a CR score alone.

PS I agree with Tmi - mark up the passage before reading just like he/she describes.

For me, I read the questions then answer them 1 by 1. I normally get around 4 wrong, so it works for me.

My CR on my last test was even lower than yours 530 T.T I've been studying CR like the whole summer and it only went up to high 500s...all I'm aiming for on the Oct. test is low 600s and I'll be really happy...yeah I know sad
