My name is bryan and I am currently am a Freshmen at NYU. I am in CAS and a double major in Politics and Economics and I am doing a cross school minor in Social Work at Silver. I lived in Hayden Hall, but due to a bad roommate issue, I now live in Third North.

I dont work for the school or anything, but I remember being in your position exactly one year ago (I also got in to NYU Early Decision), and I remember I had a million questions. Feel free to ask me anything about anything, be it about housing, school, orientation, the best bars, GLBT life, clubs, sports (no just kidding), really anything.

Anyway, NYU is my top choice if I can afford it. I’ve heard that NYU doesn’t give out a lot of financial aid or scholarships. Just want to hear what your take on it is.

This is really true. NYU is HORRIBLE with financial aid. While I know a few people on really good academic scholarships, most people are going to graduate up to their eyeballs with debt. On top of this, the Office of Fin Aid is really bad. I have had some friends who have gone and asked for additional help for a special circumstance (i.e.: parents lost jobs) and they were not accommodating. NYU is SO EXPENSIVE and you should also factor in the cost of living in the city (like… a bag of groceries is $50).

So, while I am currently broke because I am paying for NYU, I think its worth it because I LOVE IT! You will have to determine if you can swing it and if you feel it is worth it. And don’t expect much help from NYU.

NYU is definitely bad with the financial aid. I called them when I saw my financial aid and asked for more money, and they gave me like $3,000 more though. so if you end up needing a couple more thousand, you can always try that :)

btw bryan I’m also a freshman in CAS, picking up the social work minor next semester (spring 2010). did you take skills in interpersonal communication yet?

Patty- I havent taken any Social work classes yet, but next semester I am taking service learning. I think I am going to most of my social work classes senior year.

does nyu send a confirmation of deposit? I sent in mine last minute and I haven’t received an email or letter or anything so now I’m panicking just a bit.

Of course NYU doesnt. There is so many red lines and tapes here I sometimes feel that I am in the USSR. I just checked to see if my check cleared, but dont worry, NYU still wants you :D

^ Well it depends on the individual’s major/ schedule among other things. My friend has classes only Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. ( She is in CAS I think…)

I’m also a freshman at NYU as well. I’m not sure if Bryan minds, but I would also like to help answer questions. But to answer haribobear’s question, I feel as if quite a few students do have jobs here, (or this may just be my perception, I myself do not have a job). After all, New York is expensive to live in. It certainly is maneagable if you prioritize your time. I’ve also seen people holding as many as three different jos. Getting a job is eaisier if you have work-study. If you don’t, you unfortunately will have to find one off-campus (one reason why I don’t have a job ^^).

this is so nice of you! I have tons of questions so feel free to just pick and choose if you don’t want to answer them all :)

How much choice do you have in terms of gen ed classes? Like, is everyone stuck in calculus for the math requirement (if there is one, idk) or is it easy to find a more interesting class?

What do you think of politics so far? I want to major in politics/international relations/Spanish and I’m not sure if that’s a good decision or if the workload will make me want to jump out a window…

I guess you probably haven’t done this yet but do you know how much it costs to study abroad and how many times you can do it? They told me 4 but I feel like there’s going to be a lot of hidden restrictions :(

Do you find yourself using the subway a lot, and if so, do you spend a lot of money on it?

I’m not a student yet, but I know that you will be taking MAP course mainly in your first year so you course load should be similar to that of other freshmen.
