The maximum credit limit per semester is 18 credits. It just depends on how many credits your individual classes are worth. Some classes are worth less than 4 credits, based on some coursed I’ve read about on the website.

How much are MAP courses worth? I was thinking I would take three MAP courses per semester, plus two courses in my major. Is this a far-fetched idea? My major courses are each 4 credits, so unless the MAP courses are less than 4 credits, I will have totaled 20 credits per semester. How much extra will I have to pay?

Oh, and how do labs work, in terms of credits? Are they 0 credits?

Labs are zero, I believe.

You’ll have to pay PER CREDIT for that 5th class. It’s $1,137 PER CREDIT.

[NYU > Office of the Bursar > Tuition/Fees > Fall and Spring > College of Arts and Science (Undergraduate)](Tuition)

MAP courses are almost always four credits. There’s a reason most people take 16 credits. Also, the work might almost be overwhelming.

Well, if I’m allowed 18 credits, and I end up with 20, don’t I just have to pay for TWO credits? Because that’s the difference? Please say yes…

Aaahhh NYU is expensive enough as is! Ughhh.

Do you think I would have difficulty scheduling five classes per semester? I always thought there were plenty of kids who took five classes, at any given school…

“Five classes” means different things at different colleges. Each college has different standards as to which constitutes a standard courseload. And yes, you only pay for the TWO credits.

I wouldn’t even recommend taking 18 credits for your first semester, let alone 20. Why bother? 20 credits is just foolish.

Thanks!

What does the average NYU first-semester courseload look like?

Writing the Essay
Nat Sci
A course for your major
(insert awesome sounding course you would never think of taking in high school or another MAP course)

Since you’re still adjusting to college, don’t push it.

Ehh. Not sure if that would work for me. I would end up taking MAP courses until forever, and I would also end up saving waaaay too many major courses until later on.

By Nat Sci, you mean Nat Sci + Lab, right? Are first-year Gen Chem, Bio, Physics more like weeder courses? With like 600 students per class? Or are they doable?

What about foreign language? How hard is it to place out of that (or out of Beginner I or II and into one of the Intermediates)?

“What about foreign language? How hard is it to place out of that (or out of Beginner I or II and into one of the Intermediates)?”
You can take a language placement test that will determine which level class you will start in. I don’t think it’s very hard to place out of Elementary I provided you have experience in that language.

To be honest, you WANT to take many major courses later on; your professors will remember you much better when it comes time to get letters of recommendation for grad school.

Orientation will explain all of this, trust me!

My major is math.

It’s different from the humanities. I don’t think it’s good to take mostly math classes all day long. My schedule needs to be more balanced.

can you get out of classes like writing the essay if you get a 4 or 5 on an AP English class?

According to the website, no. Only a “similar course taken at another university.”

And AP Lang doesn’t count for anything–credits nor placement.

^Yeah, you can’t get out of WTE because they said writing can always be improved.

I don’t think you can get out of ConWest or World Cultures either. Except, you can get credit for AP World History and APUSH. You still have to take the class though.

WTE is like one giant bonding experience for freshmen. Everyone goes through it, and everyone understands how useless it is. Lol. Just be lucky you aren’t Steinhardt, we have TWO semesters of WTE!

Getting out of ConWest or World Cultures depends on what school you’re in. My friend who is in Steinhardt got exempted from both ConWest and World Cultures because of AP World History and APUSH. I’m in Steinhardt also and i think my advisor told me that AP Lit could also exempt you from ConWest. I’m not sure about that though.

But my friend from CAS wasn’t exempt from ConWest with APUSH so im guessing exemption’s different for each school except for Writing the Essay. Everyone has to take that… unfortunately.

i am DYING to go to NYU unfortunately i didnt get in last year but i am trying to transfer in this year. my GPA is about 3.5 hopefully a 3.6 by years end and i have 31 GPA any knowledge about whether to attempt CAS or Gallatin?

I know there isnt a very tight knit community at NYU from what ive heard its a very independent atmosphere…do you think this could be a problem for a transfer ie meeting people making freinds…feeling like a part of it?

ohh and do i have to take SATII as a transfer?

how is the studio arts program in steinhardt?
