Help getting in the Academy

hi, I am a Freshman in high school and I was wondering what grades sre best for getting in to the Naval Academy. My dad went to the academy, and he said that they have a two track admissions process to get in, where alumni children can get in easier. I am wondering if I have good enough grades to get in, if I keep on this track, or if I should really improve.

I have around a 3.3 right now, but I really felt the call to improve my grades, and so far this quarter i have a 3.63, and I am expecting around a 3.46 this semester. I play football and lacrosse, I play an instrument, I plan on joining NHS, and I go to a Catholic School which usually graduates at least 1 person to the academy each year. I take above my grade level math and science and am planning to attend the academy's STEM program. I also take hnors classes and am signed up for AP classes. Do you think I have what it takes? What would help my chances? Thank You.

The academy employs a fairly complex point system for evaluating candidates. Of course, they have to maintain the mandated geographic diversity so it’s possible that a candidate from Idaho may get in with less impressive credentials than somebody from the San Diego area of California (much more competitive).

You get some extra points from having a alum parent; how many?, I don’t know. But it will not override an overall inferior record.

If I were you, I would forget about any advantage there may be from having a grad parent and try to get in on your own merits. Control the things you can control. You cannot control who your parents are.

Less than 1% of the total needed to scholastically qualify. However, the process is all about a whole lot of little things adding up, so it does help.

Perhaps what your dad was talking about was a Presidential nomination. If he is a career Naval Officer, either active duty or reserves or a combination of both, reaching certain parameters, you are eligible for a Presidential nomination which might, in some ways, prove beneficial.

Where are you from?
Are you a minority?

They also are looking for leadership–captain, first chair, starting a club.

I am not a minority, and Im from Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Hey Butler …w/ a moniker like yours? You’re a slam dunk …tonite and in a coupla years. Go Butler! Go Navy!!

Haha. Thank you for the tips and insight. Its much aprecciated.

Do check out the Presidential nomination to determine if you are eligible. Virginia Beach GPAs are a little unusual because VB uses a tougher grading scale. You get to note that on your application. I would also suggest finding the Blue and Gold Officer for your high school. They can provide guidance for the process. My daughter entered the academy from a Virginia Beach high school; there are a lot of very informed people in that part of the country, so you should have lots of help. Good luck!

I agree your application looks really good. You can always raise your SAT scores more (and if you cant you should be a lock).
