Help getting into grad school

So, I'm an undergraduate student looking to apply for grad school. I'm looking at a masters program in psychology. My grades aren't that strong, I have about a 2.8 right now, and I had hopes of bringing it up this semester but I just found out that I basically will get an D or F in a class, due an attendance policy I wasn't aware of :( I basically plan on retaking the class again to bring my GPA up. As of now I'm a junior, and I plan on applying to grad schools next spring, but unfortunately the class I need to retake is only offered in the spring, so my question is, while I apply to grad schools, will they see that I'm trying to retake this class to improve my grade? Even though I'm getting a D or F, it actually won't impact my overall GPA all that much, it'll stay around the same amount, and I expect to take classes next semester and at least get a 3.5 to help pull my GPA up to an acceptable level, however I know that I most likely won't graduate with a 3.0. Is there anything else I can do to help get into grad school? (Besides ace GREs, etc) I have research experience (I'm applying to a psych program) and I plan on taking a practicum in the spring. I was considering going to a local school in the area as a non-degree graduate student and taking a class or two to help strengthen my application. Do you think that would be helpful?
