HELP HELP A 12th GRADE STUDENT FOR A DEGREE IN AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

wanttobeabrownie…i would be delighted if u could explain me more about full scholarships in details…one guy from our school got a free ride to university of kansas missourie…

So I was searching for an university with an aerospace engineering programme which gives full scholarships or even 50 % scholarships to internationals…

U are very helpful Wanttobeabrownie and are now my only councellor as we in this region of India do not have any Educational Councellor for SAT or US universities.

Hope u help me more in near future

where exactly are u applying? is it just every school with an aero/astro course?

this thread is for my search for colleges for aerospace engineering in america with scholarships…if i was educated intellectual like sidfromaus…i would be an educational councellor…not a student searching for the best colleges in us

LoL… i actually need more help than you .

Ok I Know a few guys who got into drexel with full scholarships and grades and EC’s much lesser than yours . He is actually making more money because of Drexel’s Co-op Program

I would recommend Drexel … It is not MIT . but I can guarantee you its is better than UKansas …

I will tell you the advantage of going to drexel (As i have done a lot of research on it … and it is 2nd on my list)

1)Philly is an amazing city … Not as expensive as Boston … NY and other places …(this is also an Important factor) … great weather

2)Top companies located - good contacts

3)Today getting a work permit in the US is quite next to impossible unless u get an amazing job . Drexels Co-Op programs helps you with this and even if you get an 80% scholarship … you may end up actually making more money …and still pay your fees

4) You will have more experience than an undergrad right out of the university and it will give an edge for getting a good job

Hope this helps …

another few universities where you may get good scholarships are

1)MSU
2)Case western

Hope this helps …

have you made a list of uiversities where u plan to apply …

post it up … may be i can help u edit it

UCLA i believe has a good program. Roommates bro is on a fullride. Again, this is need based so you do have to look at that.

Also, look for external scholarships, seeing as you are from India, there may be some govt scholarships available?

I seriously dont feel like you should be worrying about money at this point. Instead, pick the school that you think will fit you and apply there. Once you get in, you can always negotiate fin aid.

Getting a work permit is very simple as long as you are working either on campus or working in your field of study

I dont know whether this is true for all the cases or not . Because i have got a friend at Georgia tech and he got in (he had applied to financial aid) … He was not able to negotiate the financial aid as it came to him (the whole package) … He was an amazing student though (grade 100 times better than mine and of the OP) …

Another friend of mine at Brown faces the same problem

sid can you help me out on Universities in the UK , Australia or the Uk

I have updated my stats

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/742074-everyone-help-me-out-i-really-need-help.html

I agree with sid … aplly anywhere (universities such as MIT , would certainly help u out with the fees according to ur family income)

bump…

i forgot to mention that i have more ec’s in terms of community services and scouts and guides, sports and am thinkin to join an NGO…

will these improve my chances

wanttobebrownie…ur grades somewhat looks not good but ur sat scores are really out of the box…i was astonished when i saw it and now i have gained some confidence about Sat though my classmate has somewhat different to tell about it…

Can u share some of your scoring secrets with me…
what books to follow, how to prepare, what to study and what to not…

I am giving the october satI and november satII(Physics and MathematicsII)

Can someone help me out

the SAT doesnt matter much at all. if u get over 2200 ur fine. Its the subject tests that the panel looks at.
Also, rule #1: Never do something with the sole intention of it helping your chances. Since you are applying this year, counselors will notice that you bumped up ur ECs or took initiative only this year. It will work against you. Just do things you like, and have been doing, and take a greater role in those activities instead of trying new things with the intention of hopefully coming across an activity that may or may not please the person reading your application.

The question that you need to answer is NOT what you CAN do to fit those schools, but instead what you ALREADY do to fit them. Thats the essence of making most schools. Atleast thats what i learnt after making the schools i applied for.

and i also realised that the schools that i didnt make would NOT have been good fits for me. But just like every other international, i applied because I wanted to increase the already low chances of me getting in.
I am trying to tell you that the student personality is very important, and constitutes for most of the decision making. The grades etc may push you in the top tier pile of applicants…but after the first few rounds of shortlistings, your PASSION is what will get you in, not ur SAT scores.

my ec’s are from 4th standard to basically somewhat 9th - 10th standard…as the last 2 years i focussed purely on studies…

sidfromaus can u give me in details about the univ in which u applied and in which u got with scholarships…

also wat was ur sat scores and how did u prepare

u r now quite helpul

ONLY ECs from year 9 onwards can be put on the application. None of the universities will care what you did before high school (year 9)
Scholarships = external financial aid based on merit in some field. NOT usually awarded by top tier universities. Although some of the financial aid comes in a form of scholarship as ur university will help match you up with an external scholarship donor.
eg: X is amazing at math. X has been admitted to MIT for his math abilities. X will not get a scholarship from MIT for his math abilities per se. But, if X is poor and under a certain limit. MIT will pay for all of his college tuition and boarding in the form of financial aid, external scholarship and student contribution. There are always external sources looking to provide scholarships. In this case, MIT has just done the searching for the candidate.

^The above is what happens in most top level schools. I am sorry, but i do not think Harvard, Yale or any of the schools of that level will offer you a scholarship based on merit. Instead it might be financial aid due to ur financial position.

and u can find my profile if you use the advance search and search for threads initiated by me. hope that helps, my advice is based mostly on personal experience.

@reetamsingh: you seem like a solid applicant (except the 11th grades). i’d suggest you work hard on your SATs… aim for 2200+ and a perfect SAT 2… also, work hard on your preboards or 12th mid-yearlies. again- aim for a 90+. i’d suggest you DON’T send your 11th grade transcript as this seems to be your weakest link… i know a lot of singaporeans do this (cuz virtually everyone screws up in the 11th grade!)- so yeah! (:

you have SOLID extracurriculars! the NASA thing- though is common, but since it’s related to your preferred major, it looks goo-oood! (: plus you seem very well-rounded! so well, here’re the colleges i suggest (based on how good they are for aerospace engg)

MIT (Super-high-reach for everyone… but offer generous aid if they want you!)
Georgia Tech (NO AID… but EASIER to get into… i’d say you’re a match there)
uMich (NO AID… but you’re a match here as well)
Stanford (difficult to get in with aid- but if you do make it, they have generous aid)
Purdue (EXCELLENT aerospace engg programme- highly non-selective)
UCLA and Berkeley (NO AID… not as hard as MIT and stanford to get into- prestigious)
Penn-state: virtually a safety!
duke (pretty good when it comes to aid!)

do research about these schools- it’s pretty hard to get into a school with a good aeronautical engg programme with a lot of aid. i’d say… aim for MIT and stanford, but if you can afford it- UCLA, berkeley, michigan and purdue are AMAZING options too!

also, do consider nanyang technological university, singapore! they offer 100% scholarships and actually give you like a 500 dollar stipend to study there! and they have a really good (by asian standards) aeronautical engineering programme there. (i know people who turned down cornell, brown and berkeley for it!!) (:

in a hurry… so yeah… this post is kinda all-over-the-place and disoriented! so sue me!

I agree with 100%Tuna about what you need to do for your 12th. Focus on your SAT I’s. SAT II should be fairly straightforward as you just have to know the syllabus.

I would add these to the list of colleges 100%Tuna suggested.

Franklin Olin (It is a very good small school, and you have to pay a minimal fee, about $1000 a year. They give a scholarship to pay for the tuition. However, it is very new, and is hardly 5 years old. However it is very competitive.)
Cooper Union and Rensselaer are also very cheap and well known for engineering programs, however they may not have seperate aerospace programs.

UT Austin is one of the top schools for Aerospace engineering, and is very close to houston (NASA). I am not sure if they give much financial aid.

I would not apply to UK universities if I were you. There is almost no financial aid available to international students, and the total fees are much higher. There are also no well known colleges for aeronautical engineering, like those in the US. (I have studied 11th and 12th in the UK, and found the US colleges are better in any engineering program.

can anyone give me more suggestions for univeristies with good undergraduate courses in physics, applied physics…

Also is there any university which allows one to have degrees both in aerospace engineering and Intenational Relations at the same time (dual degree) and i know the combination is awkward but i am interested in both the topics

reetamsingh, if you want to “have degrees both in aerospace engineering and Intenational Relations at the same time” you could double major at Texas A&M. Might be hard to finish in 4 years, though.

What are the options for MS in Physics??? With my profile were do i have the chances to get into…

bump…
