HELP...Hollins vs. McDaniel vs. Denison

I was accepted into and have to choose to attend one of three colleges: Denison University, Hollins University, or McDaniel College.

Most people have probably never heard of these schools.

The choice is difficult. I am not too excited about the schools' surrounding areas and towns. The academic area of each college seems to be a good "fit" for me.

I think I want to be an English or Psychology or Journalism major. I am a bit...eccentric and easily bored without intellectual stimulation or interesting activity, but I like a nice, easy pace to things. I am an A and B student, excellent at English, horrifying in Math. I love to dance and "discuss things."

Which college should I choose? The decision is up to me, but still I would like to hear others' opinions.

First, is money an issue? Is it going to cost the same no matter which school you choose? Dennison would be considers the more academically competitive school to get into just based on admissions rates and test scores.

Have you looked at the distribution requirements for each school? One might have more requirements than the others and could make a difference to you. Just about every LAC we visited talked about the Campus “Bubble” meaning there was no reason to leave the campus. What sort of activities are posted on their calendars for student entertainment on the weekends? What sort of speakers do they bring in? Do they have a student newspaper or literary magazine? If so, what do you think of the articles being published? Take a look at the departments you’re interested in and see how they differ from school to school. Look at the class listing and see what classes are being offered in each department? There are a lot of ways to start differentiating the school online before you have to go with your gut instinct. Three great choices-good luck!

I am a current senior at Hollins and I understand where you are coming from with most people never hearing of your school, everyone always thinks I attend school in Holland haha. I have heard of McDaniel though, a friend of mine from high school goes there.

Hollins is located right outside the downtown area of Roanoke, about 15-20 minutes from the shops, restaurants, bars, and the wonderful farmers market they have on weekends. The Hollins campus itself is an enclosed campus, we have “the loop” which is the road circling campus. This does not mean that you become trapped inside and can never get out haha Hollins provides a shuttle from campus to downtown and the mall between wednesdays and saturdays. Its a great way to get off campus and to not have to spend gas money constantly. Also, Hollins has the Hollins Activities Board (HAB) and they are constantly planning and executing a BUNCH of events on campus every month so there is ALWAYS something to go and do, even if you just need a study break.

I am a Psychology major at Hollins and I could not be happier with my department. All of the professors are funny, reliable, and always open to helping you with anything you might need. Every class I have taken has been entertaining and kept me at a pace both fast enough to remain interesting and set well enough that you are not put behind. At Hollins, we have “Skills and Requirements” instead of typical GenEds. You will most likely have to take one math class for your “q” (Quantitative Reasoning) as a freshman but you also will have a “Q” (Quantitative Reasoning aka Math) requirement which can fulfill with a History Class, Art Class, Dance Class, etc and not be confined to taking another Math class.

There are so many opportunities at Hollins and I hope I have done a satisfactory job of answering some of your questions. If you have any others, please feel free to email me! sga_vp@hollins.edu :)
