I just received a grad school offer today....but in the email, they seem to have the impression that I'm a female (they addressed me as Ms. so and so), when I am actually male!!

So when I looked back at a copy of my application, I found that I actually accidentally ticked the female box instead of the male box!!

I'm thinking the best thing to do would be to email and tell them, but I'm worried they might be like "damn, what a bonehead" or "what else has this guy lied about" and then rescind my offer!

How do I tell them without looking like a complete bonehead or a liar??

This is too dumb of a mistake for anyone to think you did it it intentionally or with hopes of gaining from it. After all, it’s almost impossible to get away with. Just tell them what you said here: didn’t notice until you got called Ms., checked app and it was ticked female, etc.

I did worse. I thought the admissions dean was a woman and it was a man. Name could be either but is more often male, but I have a friend (female) with his name. Addressed him as “Ms.” at least five times. I just apologized: “Excuse me for using the wrong form of address. I first saw your name in the e-mail, not on the website accompanied by your picture.”

I think you should write them immediately and make a short and clear statement that you are a male, and that you must have checked the wrong box by mistake.

I don’t think they will assume it was on purpose, especially not if you clear it up right now. They will probably just chuckle and change it. THey know you were nervous and focused on other things.

Just a word of note, however. Since you were accepted into a STEM program, and you are an international, your correction may receive more than just a ‘nod to clerical error’.
