HELP, how many sciences should i take?

hi guys

in my school, 2 general sciences are offered in gr 9 and 10
and 3 sciences are offered in gr 11 and 12, ie bio chem phys

i want to go to Stanford for math/economics/international relationships
math is probably my minor

so how important is my scicence course? i'm only taking Chem right now, so i'll have 2 years of general science and 2 years of chem, dat is 4 years of science

i took all the math courses tho

does my chem only science timetable hurt me?

thx!

i took; earth space, bio, chem, anatomy, physics, ap envrio, ap physics, and astronomy

and don't consider myself a science person at all. i would double up a year if i were you to be more competitive

I thought someone was supposed to be studying for APs, lol.

I don't think that only taking chem will hurt you too much (taking your expected major into consideration). However, I'm wondering why chem for two years? Can't take another science next year or maybe, as diesel recommended, double up?

If you are going to minor in math you should be sure to take all core sciences esspecially physics.

lol orange glove yaaa i knowww

i think the system in Canada is different

we have grade 11 chem, and gr 12 chem, these 2 are continuous =)

so should i take physics or bio? if i take all 3 sciences, thats 6 courses since all gr 12 level courses require the gr 11 course as prerequisite =)

input guys>

thx~!

Is at least one of those two years of Chem an AP? Stanford will take into consideration what your school offers and what you take...

And have you looked at taking courses at a local college?

for me it's like this..

Frosh: Biology
Soph: Chemistry
Junior: Physics
Senior: AP physics and AP Chemistry

wow
i see
you dont have to continue?

in canada, gr 9 and 10 sciences are mandatory
gr 11-chem 11 , phys 11, bio11
gr 12-chem12, phys 12 , bio12

but the courses are quite deep, so you have to take both years to "make it count" here

do you guys only have 1 year in US?
thx

I'm Canadian so I get what you're trying to say.

If you're going to be a junior next year then you should try and take all three. I HATE science but I have to take all of them for my planned major.

Gr. 11 --------> Biology 11, Chemistry 11, Physics 11, and I'm considering doubling up so that I have Physics 12. If I can't double up on Physics, I'll do Calc, or Stats.

Gr.12 ---------> Biology 12, Chemistry 12, and maybe Physics 12.

The thing is I will barely have time for electives or anything like that.

If you're in Gr. 12, I'd try and double up on Physics if I were you. More math involved. :]

oh my goodness, once science per year is quite enough, i promise

I'm basically doing the same thing iherzi's doing. For sophmore year I'm taking Honors Bio, Chem, and Physics. Then for junior year I'm taking the APs for all of those. The only other AP I am taking is Calculus along with the sciences. I'm thinking of going into math as a minor as well, and major in a science.

I will be finishing all the grade 11 core science courses (CH11, BI11, PH11) at the end of this year (I'm in grade 10 too).
Chem 11 is a joke, and Bio 11 is not that hard either.
Physics 11 was a pain in the butt for me, but I'm sure lots of people do fine with it. It's probably just me XD
Take as many science courses as you can during your grade 11 and 12 year.
You'll probably end up having few spare blocks in grade 12 year so that you can take some of your electives.
Also, you can self-study AP Bio or AP Chem after finishing Bio 12 and Chem 12, which is what I'm doing.
If you only want to take few sciences, I'd recommend Physics and Chemistry.
And I see you're looking into IR and economics. Take Econ 12 if your school offers it, or take something like Comp. Civ 12.

And you also have the option of taking corrosponding courses or summer schools if you REALLY need the courses...

hi mrclassicfreak

ya but i also want to minor math, so does a lack of science hurt me?

also a lil bit abt myself: i came here in gr 9 and i decided to study french in HS for all four years, unfortunately i had to take 2 extra credits to follow the U level ( beginner-->applied-->academic(U)) so I don t really have that many space =(

so ya, will a lack of science hurt a math prospective?

thanks!

can you elaborate on corresponding courses too?

thx!

also i'm in gr 11 already XD

wow ive only taken biology, chemistry, and marine biology. next year i will be taking physics....

i also plan to take physiology or anatomy but at a community college because they wont fit into my schedule

btw here's the classes i took over the years,

every course taken is at the U level, except for the gr 9 and 10 courses

gr 9

gym(required)
math 9
english 9
drama 9(required elective for diploma)

french intro
science 9
tech 9 (required elective for diploma)
geography 9 (required elective for diploma)

gr 10

french 9 (i must have this for grade 10+ french)
french 10
math 10
english 10

science 10
history 10
career/civics 10 (required by diploma)
accounting 11 ( M level course, required by some canadian universities for accounting major)

gr 11
comp sci 10
comp sci 11
math 11
data 12

french 11
english 11
chem 11
accounting 12

gr 12
politics 12
econ12
english 12
french 12

calculus 12
vector 12
chem 12
comp sci 12

here are a few questions:

are science courses considered more "prestigeous" than other courses, say politics, of the same level?

do computer sciences count as sciences? if not, how are they classified? ( they are all M level, the highest level offered)

maybe it's just me, but i think my schedule is quite balanced (except for the science part?) agree lol?

is there any online school i can enroll for summer credit that are relatively cheap?

thanks!

I really don't think you need Comp. Science if you're going to major in Science or Math.
It's completely upto you to make your choices, but I would recommend dropping Comp. Sci 12. It seems like you are taking a little bit of everything. The colleges will not look how many different fields of study you took in your HS years. It's good to take the courses in the fields you want to study in post-secondary institution.
Also, if you really need science courses, I would also drop French 12 (unless it's REQUIRED)
I'd say you definitely need more science courses, and you can make a decision to drop some of elective courses and put in sciences XD

And computer science is a completely different branch of science. I don't think it's considered A SCIENCE unless that's what you specifically want to do. And as I mentioned above, you do not need to balance your time table XD It's good to show them you have a required knowledge in your field of study.

hi guys

thanks for the input

mrclassicfreak: so you think my timetable looks fine for someone who wants to major/minor in math?

comp sci is requried by some Canadian universities for the majors i want to go to, thats why @_@

also, is anyone here from Ontario? How do you guys think about taking an extra year? ie the grade 13?
does it hurt my chance at Canadian/ US universities?
I''ll need that year to take more english and my much needed science XD

as i said, i came to canada in gr 9 and i had no clue how to pick classes, basically in china we get assigned to our classes =)

so do you guys think its a good idea for me to take an extra year of hs?

thanks!
