Help!?! How to ask for more financial aid...

alright so here's my situation...i just recieved all my financial aid awards late last week. my number one school, my state school, (Uconn), wasn't very generous with their award at all. Not to be condescending, but my stats qualify me for most their merit aid qualifications and scholarships. those same stats earned me up to $10,000 in merit aid at schools like the University of Pittsburgh and other places. But for some reason, Uconn was very stingy with aid...giving me only a couple thousand in loan money and $640 in work study, and that's it. my EFC was less than $15,000, which is upper medium i guess, but even so, why would other colleges, public universities even, offer money to an out of state applicant? Even my guidance counselor claimed they "snubbed" me.

So, I am planning on writing a letter to their financial aid dept informing them they are, and have been my numero uno school, and that my i need more aid in order for my education to be realistically affordable. citing family reasons that the fafsa application doesn't have a fill-in question for...the whole sob story and what not. also i'm enclosing a really really awesome rec letter from my wrestling coach/ap history teacher that he wrote me after the season was over, and therefore after college application season.

Is this normally how such a thing is done? Any input, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated...COME ON, i know i'm not the only one who could use some extra financial aid from their first choice college.

Send 'em copies of the aid awards from the other schools and ask them to match or do better. Don't tell them they are #1, but are "one of my top schools". if you tell them they are #1 they will be less willing to help(and surely won't go over offers from other schools).
