Hi, I'm posting in this forum because I'm hoping someone can help me with reading my parents' tax forms. They know very little English and I have to fill out all these financial aid forms myself. They filed a 1040 Form for 2003. Now I'm trying to fill the CSS profile and under section J, it has 2003 U.S. Taxes Paid, and 2003 Untaxed Inc. & Benefits.

Now... I'm having trouble reading their tax forms. I really can't find where it says how much we paid or have to pay. My dad says we paid, but according to me (based on my understanding of the form) we paid 0. Also, I can't find where or how to find out the 2003 Untaxed Inc. and Benefits are.
Thanks

There was probably an amount withheld that you get credit for. Your final payment might well be 0 or even a refund but the total tax due is a few lines up before you deduct taxes withheld. That's what you paid in tax.

Will it be on the line under wages/salaries? On the line Taxable Interest? Sorry, but I'm not following well. Oh, there is a refund amount by the way.

fortunately for me, I'm a year away from fafsa, but, if I recall reading somewhere, that it is net taxes paid as a deduction, not just taxes withheld.

Chaujun: Princeton Review has a pretty good book called How to Pay For College Without Going Broke. The book include a description on how to complete fafsa. If you have a bookstore nearby, you could spend a couple hours browsing tomorrow morning.

Yes, taxes withheld plus any additional payment due equals the total paid. If you get a refund it works the other way----you would subtract the refund from taxes withheld to get net taxes paid.

If you're using the 2003 1040, the line for total tax is line 43 However, I think you're supposed to be using the 2004 income tax return if you're preparing this for the school year that starts in the fall of 2005.

i just went to the bookstore and saw princeton's reviews book. i'm going to go tomorrow with pencil and paper :) (Cost $20!).

In the income tax return for 2003, I looked at line 43 and it says 0. Does that mean my parents didn't pay any income tax at all? and it says a refund of 415 near the bottom of the second page.

Go out and get a tax program. Cost less than $15. 2003 program is free. This year 2004 may be had for perhaps free but with filing costs. The benefit is that the tax programs explain it all. TurboTax, TaxAct, and others will really help you out and gives what it situatiions. Downloadable. Get the deluxe version for few bucks more. Will save you big $$ now and in the future.
