I like to study alone. I don’t like group study or discussing with a close friend of mine especially if we are in the same dorm and classroom. I think I am going to compare my knowledge level to someone else, and sometimes this drives me crazy because I am a slow learner, and I need time to consume everything. When I discuss with a smarter friend of mine, I would feel I am stupid. I am gonna be really upset and think to myself: If I cannot catch up with other people’s pace I am a loser. Studying anything will feel much less pleasurable afterwards. And I would gradually lose the motivation.
Maybe I need to talk with a psychiatrist? I really don’t want to be a jealous friend. This makes me question about my identity all the time. And I think in berkeley people smarter than me are literally everywhere…
Me, too. You should be an economist. We don’t like to work in groups.
Why? What’s wrong with wanting to study by oneself? What is the psychiatrist going to do to “help”?
Each person has her/his own style. I myself am a loner. I did try group study a few times, but every single time I felt that I would have made greater progresses had I studied just by myself. My wife had a group of classmates she studied with, and she felt that the interaction with the classmates helped to reinforce her learning. My D is also a loner. She told me group study was “a waste of time.”
Relax. Do whatever you feel comfortable with.
One piece of advice, however: if you need help, don’t hesitate to go to the TA or the instructor. They have office hours for a reason.
I would definetly go and a TA if this bothers your or an instructor, always good to get their prespective on a lesson or a 1 on 1 approach.
As far a studying alone trust me tons of people prefer it, I hate group projects, detest them, I dont like to study with others either, I like to keep to myself mainly because I study in my own way, and I have my own techniques, everything works differently for everybody dont worry about that, if you ever feel in need of help just get it after class or something, right down the question or problem and revisit it later. Never doubt your abilities, a 10minute walk through with your proffesor or teacher can answer all your questions, never be afraid to ask.
