HELP! I cant decide between tulane and University of Miami

I cant decide between tulane and the university of miami, any helpful comments to make my decision easier?

helpful comment #1:

me too.

i'm leaning towards tulane b/c miami isnt a really residential campus and i think i want that. everyone at miami moves off campus after freshman year because the dorms suck...not that they dont at tulane but whatever. and everyone at miami has a car but i dont think there are that many at tulane unless you live off campus where you would need one.

I was in the EXACT position you are in last year around this time. I chose Tulane ultimately, and now am trying to transfer into Miami. Hah.

Just visit both, learn as much about both as you can, and go with your gut if all else fails. One school may feel more suited to your needs, or you may just walk on campus and go "AHA! Here's where I'm going." Although that proved ill-fated for me. lol.

Also go with maybe who gives you more money. In terms of academics, they are basically equal, at this point I'd say Miami being slightly stronger (they have a lot higher percentage of people in the top 10% of their classes.) They're both very similar.

Good luck!

You really can't go wrong at either school if it has the right program for you. If you go to Tulane, you will have a community service requirement, which is great, and in addition, you should consider being a partner with the city in its recovery. My daughter chose Tulane over UM because she felt she can make a bigger contribution to the school and city, and as she finishes her sophomore year she never looked back. Reading Jeremy's posts over the past year, it seems that he somehow latched on to people without direction and doing major partying 24/7. Yes, I have heard of students at both schools who partied too hard, and lost their scholarships - now they are on probation or dropping out.

yea so everyone i tell about my dilemma (add in Georgia Tech) says one of three things:

1) how could you turn down Tech?
2) screw tulane, go to miami! you dont want to deal with hurricane aftermath!
3) why would you ever want to go to miami? Tulane on the other hand.... perfect for you!

I'm a current senior in high school who will attend Tulane next year.

Personally, I wouldn't go to UMiami if they gave me a full ride. OK, I kid, but it would at least take a ****load of money to get me there.

I can't really explain why without writing an essay, but I really don't like Florida. If Florida's your thing, it might be ok but I'm just not a fan of the state..especially the Miami area.

Some people might disagree, but the partying at UMiami seems wayyyy more pervasive and intense at UMiami. It exists on a large scale at both schools but it seems boderline inescapable at UMiami. Don't get me wrong, I plan on partying a ton in college but I don't want to feel like I have to go out every night in order to fit in. I talked to a girl at Tulane who loves it but she said she doesn't even go out every week. Miami, on the other hand, seems to have fewer people who can take it easy with the partying.

omg tulsadem have you spent a night at Tulane? I think you might be in for a rude awakening lol. The partying was so pervasive I had to transfer out!! It's probably as intense as Miami's if not worse (but I've not been to miami----yet.)

hey. i just thought i would comment on this discussion because I am a senior at a high school in miami and have been accepted to both tulane and umiami. My older sister went to Umiami and so have many other people in my family. My sister partied some, started a club, started a free clinic for domestically abused women in downtown, was in the dean's dozen, made great memories and best friends for a life time and is now in medical school at UM. Just like most other schools it has a great social life...the nearby beaches, clubs, bars etc. don't hurt the social scene, but partying is NOT as pervasive as you think. You can take part in the partying, but under no circumstance will you not fit in if you do not party every night. The best part of Umiami is that they offer so many other things to do, you don't even need to party in order to fit in. Clubs, marathons, movies, plays, and cultural events are always taking place on campus. Miami is very diverse and it can be seen on Umiami's campus. I love UM, but I am considering going to Tulane because I want to get the full college experience of living in a new city. If you have any doubts about UM, I encourage you to visit it because you will not be disappointed. Miami is an amazing city with lots of fun things to do and many opportunities to explore internships and future careers. Oh and by the way, both Tulane and Umiami get hurricanes. Don't expect to come to Miami and be safe from hurricanes...we get threatened by major hurricanes every once in a while too.

Two of my friends started out at UMiami, one liked it ok, the other hated it. The one who liked it ok transferred to Tulane, the other to American (DC). And you all should not assume one school is better than another based on US News. For instance, if you are majoring in Latin American studies, there isn't a better university in the US than Tulane. If you're majoring in international relations, why would you pick UT-Austin over American. The point is that almost every university has a top program, and if you don't know what you want to major in, go to the campus you can afford or that you think you will like best first.

any other comments?

See, I'm wary of Miami because I think the partying WON'T be that great. While I like Miami Beach and have friends who live in that area, a lot of other places in Miami (South Beach comes to mind especially) are really trashy and lame.

Please prove me wrong, because I like U Miami a lot.

I'm from Miami and went to Tulane. I have to say Tulane provides more of the classic college experience, in the way of the campus, the activities, the town and public transportation. It's also a great school. I would definitely visit both. A visit will tell you a lot. New Orleans is an amazing city, btw.
