People have posted that if schools know how many others you applied to, it has a negative effect (Tufts). Can anyone confirm or deny this with their own experience? I made a mistake and accidentally let the schools know which ones I applied for. Is this going to really hurt my chances? It seems crazy that we have to be so deceptive when it comes to applying for schools. Schools have to know that we are applying for more than one, right? BTW, I'm an international student and I applied to more than ten schools.

In our experience, when filling out individual school apps (as opposed to SSAT, TABS, Gateway, etc.), the schools asked what other schools we were applying to. It is not a secret, and it should not be a problem. If you are using a group site, then schools will assume you are applying to more than one. Ten is not out of the realm of “normal.”

The only problem I can think of off the top of my head would be if you sent all ten schools a letter saying “you’re my number one choice,” or something similar.

In most cases students apply to multiple schools and schools know this. During the admission and application process DS was asked which schools he is considering/applying.
I wouldn’t worry about other schools knowing, because they probably assume as much.
