I go to a science magnet school, so my Freshman year, my school replaced freshman history with a required technology class. The expectation for all freshmen is that a fourth year of social studies will be taken later on. I still haven’t taken the final social studies credit and I just discovered I don’t have room for it in my senior schedule next year. However, I really don’t want to take summer school! It is, of course, the option for if I really need the credit, but taking summer school would interfere with a summer internship opportunity at the US embassy Do any of you know if 4 social studies credits are needed for college, or would 3 be okay???
@attacheallegory Very few (if any) colleges would REQUIRE four social studies credits but selective colleges would no doubt like to see them – although perhaps not instead of a meaningful internship. Check the websites of colleges you are interested in. Most of them will have minimum requirements, along with a statement similar to this:
“To be most competitive in our applicant pool, it is strongly recommended that high school students continue for the third and fourth years in science and in the same foreign language, continue mathematics through calculus, and take additional courses in history.”
I think you will be OK.
In my state you only need 3 social studies credits to graduate. Check your high school graduation requirements and make sure you meet those and if you do, I don’t think its that big of a deal if you don’t take a 4th, especially if you’re interested more in STEM.
Check what your state requirements are. That is what matters.
In NJ, for example, you need to have 3 years.
Colleges won’t care that much if you are taking a STEM Major.
Talk to your GC if there is a way to take a SS class independently or online.
