I am a rising Senior but i have had a tough High School Year. My father died while i was in the ninth grade and my mother has been battling cancer since i was in the 10th. These two things have caused me to struggle with my school work which is the reason i have such a low GPA. Could i still get into college in the fall of 2010 or am i facing community college?

NOTE: I am in 6 different clubs at school
i play soccer and i take dance
i also have 2 jobs
and 102 volunteer hours
i have a recommendation from a former mayor and two city council members

no stats? nice job.

I think a lot of colleges will understand, just be sure to explain what happened and make sure to show improvement.

your EC doesn’t look bad, just make sure that your actually dedicated to all those 6 clubs though.

I’m very sorry about what you’re going through. If you look on page 5 of the Common App, there is an “Additional Statement” section which says prompts you to elaborate on “If there is any additional information you’d like to provide regarding special circumstances, additional qualifications, etc., please do so in the
space below or on an attached sheet.” I would mention everything that you have gone through in this part.

Most college applications require paperwork from your guidance counselor, so he/she could explain your situation to colleges.

From the information that you have provided, it looks like you’re an active member of your student body, and in your community. You should be very proud of yourself for this because many people, including myself, would probably not have the mental strength to be in 6 different clubs, 2 different sports, hold down 2 jobs, etc. after going through such tragic events.

Colleges understand that not every student has a peaceful, easy going, 100% stress free home environment, and that many are distracted by financial, medical, etc. issues. Try your best to get good grades in your senior year, but remember that family comes first.

thank you for your help.
I recieved i 1260 on my SAT but plan on taking it at least one more time.
