So I’m applying early action and there is an optional arts supplement for creative writing, which I did. I submitted a piece of writing I had previously wrote and only now realized that when I first wrote the piece I put it on an online writer’s website used for critiques and advice… Do colleges check for plagiarism?? If so what do I do?? My account on the website is under a pseudonym too… I really hope my application wasn’t completely disregarded already because of this…
It’s unlikely that they will check, but if it would make you more comfortable, mention on the ‘additional information’ part of the application that you submitted this piece of writing on website x under the name y, using a pseudonym to protect your privacy. You can add that your teacher/school/the website (whichever is true) can verify that this was indeed your personal work. Two lines should do it.
For the application you already submitted, I wouldn’t worry about it. They are unlikely to check - they just wouldn’t have time. But again, if it makes you feel better, send them a brief email and mention the above.
