Help, i need an outside perspective.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review my profile. My first two years of high school I was a solid 4.0 student, and never received anything less than an A. I attend a rigorous college preparatory school and found that I took on more than I can handle this year (I am currently a junior). I am a nationally competitive debater, and throughout the month of December and January I attended a debate tournament every weekend (both in state and out of state). This had a significant impact on my grades and I'm concerned that it will hurt my overall chances for getting into schools. Some of the schools I'm looking at (like Berkeley and USC) have debate programs, but even then, I don't think that it's a guarantee. Thank you for your help!

Major: Communications/Political Science (I'm not really set on this)

Gender: Female
Race: Caucasian
Class: Junior
Academics:
GPA UW: 3.71 (school doesn't do weighted)
SATs: 1930: (CR: 670, M: 590, W: 670, Essay: 10) I plan on re-taking this, my calculator stopped working on the test.
SAT Sub: I will be taking the subject tests in June
PSATs: 197
ACT: I haven't gotten my scores back yet
APs/Honors:
Fresh: English H
Soph Year: Western Civilizations H, English H
Junior: AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP English
Senior: (signed up for): AP Psychology, AP English, AP Statistics, AP Spanish

ECs
Sports:
Volleyball (Freshman and sophomore year)

Music:
I was in choir for a year, but it's not my passion.

Clubs:
I am a nationally competitive varsity policy debater, which is my main passion. Last year I qualified to nationals as a sophomore. This year I qualified to the Tournament of Champions (the super bowl of debate) and nationals. I won the varsity division of Stanford policy and I was also co-state champion with another team from my school. This year I have gone to about 7 out of states tournaments (my travel schedule is fairly rigorous which has made my grades suffer) and have placed in at least the top 32 teams at every tournament (the size of tournaments vary). I am currently the social chair and am a likely candidate for team president next year.

Summer:
Marine Biology camp - 2 years
UC Berkeley debate camp (last summer and this summer)

Volunteer/Work:
I am a member of a mother/daughter charity organization called National Charity League. We work with various philanthropies in our community. Over the last three years I have done over a 150 hours in community service. I am also the president elect for next year, so I will be presiding over all of the girls and organizing a lot of the community service projects that we do.

What are my chances at:
UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, pretty much any of the UCs
USC
Yale
University of Puget Sound
Boston College
Boston University

Also, do you have any school recommendations for me?

i am a debater too. your debate stats are impressive! i would focus your essays on debate and convey that passion. if u bring your sat’s up to ~2100-2200 and gpa up to ~3.8, i’d say:
UC’s- Match
USC- Match
Yale- Low Reach
U of Puget Sound- Safety
Boston College- Low Match
Boston University- Match

Oh awesome, debaters will rule the world. Thanks, I appreciate the advice!

bump? another perspective would be great!

UC Berkeley - high match
UCLA - match
UC Davis - match
UC Irvine - match
UC San Diego - match
USC - high match
Yale - high reach
University of Puget Sound - no idea, sorry
Boston College - reach
Boston University - match

This might sound ignorant, but I’m new to the site. Can you explain what high match means? That is probably a really stupid question. Thank you so much for your input!

Eh, to be honest, it’s just a trite ranking of your chances of admission to a college. “High match” simply means that it’s not enough of a sure shot to be a match, but it isn’t difficult enough to get in for it to be a reach school.

This site, you will find, is quite ridiculous. Haha.

Well, I think that you have a reasonably good chance at BU, Puget Sound, USC, and Berkeley. However, for Yale and Boston College, your SAT is low. Perhaps good subject tests would compensate.

As a whole, I really like what you’ve done. I think it might be useful to add one more extracurricular activity. Not that you absolutely need it, you have impressive achievements so far, I just think that if you lighten the pressure by doing something more fun and less demanding, it would help you with GPA… It’s hard to explain. I was just thinking that something new could refresh you and give you some energy.
