I’m supposed to start this fall, and am looking at the healthcare providers available to students… not happy, not happy at all! Why is Bates located in Lewiston?!? God, I’m starting to regret my decision… the town is practically dead! Where am I supposed to go for dates? There aren’t even any MODERATE hotels in the area, much less upscale ones. Where am I supposed to go for primary care physicians?

Really having second thoughts…

Take a deep breath. D goes there and loves it. This will be her second year and she can’t wait to get back on campus. I don’t know if it is because there isn’t a LOT to do in Lewiston or that the school is small but the students are very close to one another. Portland and Freeport aren’t that far away and are nice. Now we aren’t talking NYC nice but nice in their own regard. The school has a 24/7 health center. Do you need something specific? There is a hospital in Lewiston that is good - better one in Portland. Any yes I do know – I grew up in the area eons ago. Things have changed but not that much. :)

Also if you are going as a Freshman it is normal to have questionable feelings about this big step in your life. Things are changing and sometimes that is very difficult. Even if you don’t have a car to get around there are many other students who will or there is always the zip cars that you can sign up for if you want to get off campus and go somewhere.

:)
Just found out that there’s a TGI Fridays and Applebees, and a hotel called Residence Inn, Mariott all about 2.5 miles away from campus in Auburn, ME so I’m good :)

Regarding the healthcare providers, just my annual physical, as I understood it, the available providers only provide emergency services.

Thanks for telling me to take a deep breath! Forgot that I’m going to Bates for the school and its people, not the town it’s in.

Also found out that there’s a movie theater in Lewiston and another in Auburn, too. Wonder if there are other attractions around… wow, I was really worried over nothing, hah.

There is a small mall (may be a strip mall) I can’t remember. D and her friends go to Portland to the Maine mall typically a few times a semester and go out to dinner there. Freeport has a lot of shops including LL Bean headquarters which is something to see. D typically has her annual physical prior to going to school during the summer but I would think that you could either get a referral to a local dr. or ask as health services to see if they would do the physical. Not sure but I would think that may be an option. As I tell D – never hurts to ask. ;)

The film club provides on campus movies every weekend. Central Maine Medical center is ona 2-3 miles away. There are TONS of on campus things to do. We had no lack of weekend fun…And there was always the road trip to Freeport from time to time…(And Haraseekit Lobster and Lunch!)

Calm down. I am the father of a graduate from Bates and I can assure you that there are plenty of primary care physicans in the towns of Lewiston and Auburn. The twin towns are the support center for the entire county and all healthcare for the area north of them is provided in Lewiston.

Bates is a great school but if you are having second thoughts about the location in august you might want to bail out now, since the snows are coming soon.

With that user name, this thread seems misleading…

I’m a recent Bates grad who is going to agree with everyone else…1) REMAIN CALM (seriously though, calm down); 2) Lewiston has great health care providers in the area if you can’t get what you need on campus, I sought outside care and had absolutely no difficulty; 3) there’s actual a Hilton in the area and some great B&Bs (like the Ware Street Inn); 4) restaurants? try Fishbones, one of the best in Maine; how about DaVinci’s; or Espo’s; or Gritty McDuff’s; there are a lot of other chains too if that’s what you’re in to…

5) you chose Bates for its academics and its people, but I fell in love with Lewiston before I left there…
