Shoot! It does say the whole year…

movieslove - What about my suggestion of applying for the PLUS loan? If your parents get denied, the $4k extra you’d get would cover you for the year - including health insurance!

dodgermom, already on it. My mom’s pin is locked right now for 24-72 hours but I’m trying that. I hope it doesn’t intervene with my appeal but yeah… I got the $250 orientation cost waived and I’m still working on waiving the med insurance. On moday I’ll see what else in fees i can get waived.

Keep in mind you don’t get a check it credit for the $2000 work study. You have to find a job and work the hours to earn that money.

Movieslove, have you been working this summer? Most students can’t earn $4k in one summer, but I was wondering if you have any savings at all. Colleges do expect a summer work contribution. There should be job opportunities around the university as well, where you could earn towards expenses and next semester’s bill. Yeah, this is putting more burden on you, but it’s common for students to work part time.

Also, you mentioned concerns about BU not being diverse–I believe they have the 11th most diverse student body in the country. I can’t tell you the numbers as far as how many students from what cultural backgrounds, but it shouldn’t be a problem.

I am sorry if this was already answered buy my friend’s daughter here in Miami was able to qualify for more grants when she said she was paying for the school herself. I know Miami is much more generous than BU but you can always try.

As in be independent from my mother for taxes? I’ll have to consider that but my biggest issue now is just getting to BU.

Could you stay in ehealth for the whole year? $2,400 for 12 months is cheaper than what BU is charging especially if that us for just one semester…

ehealth isn’t cheaper.

[BU is charging $2141 for a whole year](<a href=“http://www.bu.edu/studentaccountingservices/resources/medical-insurance/"]BU”>Medical Insurance | Student Accounting Services), which is cheaper than my school’s insurance.

Your mother claiming or not claiming you on her taxes has nothing to do with your FA.

I just came back from church. I’ve been a member since 5th grade and I reached out to them today. My youth minister said the most he could do was pray and I appreciate that but also ran into one of the reverends and asked if there was a scholarship fund, he said no but asked me to jot down a few notes about my situation and he’ll bring it up at the next broad meeting. he said he doesn’t think they can cover the whole thing but they will see what they can do. I’m just really grateful and optimistic. With over 40 scholarships done I’m hoping at least one of those stick too. This might be doable.

Good for you, movieslove! :)

BU is an amazing school that i have to stay away from due to finances…so i really feel for you, and i REALLY hope you find the needed funding to attend. good luck!!

whoops… :{

Guess I need to figure something else out.

“whoops”? What happened?

Maybe the church meeting didn’t yield any money?

No that’s not it, I have a pretty generous church so I feel like they will come through for me. I’m just thinking of more ways to fund raise.

Good news though, UMD duluth said I should apply asap, they’ll probably let me in. Also I completed the parent plus request for my mom, hopefully they deny her :). But I have a few questions

When I got to the end there wasn’t a signature page of anything like there was for mine, it just took me to the home page for entrance counseling and etc. My mom goes to college and used loans before, it that the reason?

I didn’t request for a specific amount, I asked for the maximum in hopes of increasing the rejection likelihood, was that dumb?

BU sent the promissory note, should I go ahead and send it in. Is it binding?

Update: Someone suggested reaching out to UMD, I did but they too are soliciting funds intensely, apparently they are broker than me…lol

THANK YOU~cptofthehouse, bluebayou, mom2collegekids, irishmam3, dodgersmom, happymomof1, sschickens, entomom, octoberdana, intparent, QuietLurkingMom, IronMaiden, JRCLMom, ddahwan, dancegrl, alexie2014

I hope some of the kids here after solving their issues take the time to say thank you, you people were an amazing and unexpected resource in my time of confusion. I heard back from the U of MN and I’m official in… again with the same no gap FINAID including books and expenses (I’m sure I can cover any miscellaneous charges they may impose) I am grateful for all the suggestions and believe me, I took heed of every one of them: I sent an appeal letter, did the parent plus, talked to my church, called Maryland again, looked at busing, applied to still enrolling colleges… everything and all was worth the effort because it makes me appreciate the U so much more. I know people still on the wait-list that will drop their current college just for the U.

Now when I take out my loans, I won’t still be ridiculously broke and concerned about money. Also I will be writing very detailed thank you letter to the counselors that let me back into the U and the BU staffers that helped me along the way.

At this point I’m just grateful for having an option still.

Here are my plans to give back based on this experience:

Should my church get back to me, I’ll meet with the leaders in person and encourage them to create a scholarship fund for others.

*I’ll write a letter to BU encouraging them to include these expenses way earlier in the process, I was somewhat fooled and honestly I’m sure student that are better prepared financially will better serve the school long-term than and extra $3K

*The Gov. does matter in this and too many people are in my position and worse off, wanting to learn more should not seem so unreachable. I will always consider the education policies of any candidate I vote for.

*CC should generate a forum dedicated to threads where in students that need votes for scholarship entries can come and request them. Many scholarships now require popular votes like FB likes to pass the first round and great kids are missing them because they don’t have 10 million friends on FB.

Thanks again, my mom would have used her retirement fund to pay but I can’t let her.

Also can I still back out of BU no consequences?

Congratulations!!! I’m glad you ended up with such a good outcome!

As for BU, the only consequence would be the loss of any deposits you might have paid. Other than that, you’re fine.

Congratulations! Wishing you all the best!
