HELP! I think I've been falsely accused of cheating!

So during yesterday’s SAT makeup I partially lifted the edge of one of the pages in my test booklet to glance at one of the previous questions in the section. I think my proctor (who was sitting right in front of me) thought that I was trying to look at a question from a previous section and made a note on her paper. I was under the impression that proctors had to confront suspected cheaters, but I’ve heard of cases in which they didn’t even mention it and just let ETS handle it later. I didn’t use any of my scores reports as I’m a senior that has already submitted all of my apps and was only taking the test for scholarship purposes. If the ETS decides that my scores were questionable enough to cancel them will the schools that I’ve already applied to be notified? Could this possibly get my acceptances rescinded? Should I request a score cancelation? I looked over the SAT’s policies but I can’t seem to find a clear answer about whether or not schools that you have previously sent scores to are notified if your scores for a later test are cancelled.

I think you are worrying yourself unnecessarily, but I recommend you do this. While your memory is fresh, write down exactly what you did and when [approximately] you did it. Include any details about the question in the same section that you wanted to look at and why you wanted to do so. You may have misinterpreted the proctor’s action, but you cannot lose by preparing yourself to respond while your memory is still fresh. I realize this does not answer your actual question. I do not know the answer to that one.

I’m interested to know as well. I’ve heard that CB can’t contact schools about cancelled scores, but I don’t know if that’s true.

Had you written another thread about this topic as well, stating that you were greatly worried? If not, then there are others who have similar concerns writing on this site. You might want to take a look at the replies there too.

@AboutTheSame I’m assuming that your suggesting that I do this because there’s a chance that CB/ETS will contact me and let me tell my side of the story?

@lostaccount I’ve browsed though many other threads on this topic but I haven’t found anything about the actual outcomes of the accusation. I’m just frustrated right now because I’m 95% certain that I made the score that I needed to make but I don’t want to risk getting my decisions rescinded because of this (assuming that the supposed accusation goes through).

@IDidntCheat : Yes. Whether it would be an opportunity or an appeal if something were to happen, it can’t hurt to have your facts straight. Memories can fade quickly.

If they think you cheated, wouldn’t they report it, whether or not you canceled your scores?

IOW, canceling your scores seems like a huge overreaction.

I did some digging and it seems like the CB’s policies are a bit ambiguous. Under the “Test Security and Fairness” section it says that:

“Your scores and your registration information, including the photo you provided, will be made
available to your high school. In the event of an investigation involving the validity of your test
scores, your photo may be made available to institutions to which you have sent your scores;
however, any college that is granted access to your photo will first be required to certify that you
are an admitted student. See “Important Information for Test-Takers,” for more details about
grounds for score cancellation and the use of your personal information and photo.”

BUT the “Grounds for score cancellation section” sections says that:

“Investigations that are pending are kept confidential, but results of completed investigations may be
communicated to intended score recipients, including if investigation indicates attempts to gain an
unfair advantage through actions such as impersonation, use of prohibited items, or attempts to
send/receive test content. When, for any of these reasons, ETS cancels a test score that has already been reported, it notifies score recipients that the score was canceled but it does not disclose the reason for cancellation unless authorized to do so by the test-taker, there is suspected impersonation, in certain cases that affect a group of test-takers, or where required by law.”

Since OP didn’t use any of his free score reports it seems like no schools would be notified, but I’m not sure if schools would be notified if CB/ETS launches an investigation into his/her scores. I haven’t been able to find anything on here about people how have had their scores canceled due to cheating so I really have no idea as to what will happen.
