This may be a long read but I will appreciate the help. The objective is me transfer to a Cal State in Los Angeles County.

I am in the worst condition in terms of academics. I originally started CC in June of 2008. Kept going Semester after Semester to attempt to transfer to a UC. Eventually I did for Fall 2011 at UC Davis as a Chemistry major. I took my first Organic Chemistry course and I flunk badly; 1.68 GPA. Winter Quarter came and I tanked again; 1.56 GPA. Spring Quarter I finally snapped and decided to withdraw. There is no record of Spring Quarter other than withdraw. I come back home (I am from Los Angeles County) and I am here writing this on what to do for my future. I hate working minimum wage jobs because I have the capabilities to be more than this. I am 22 years old.

You may ask why I did so poorly? Many factors. First, I got homesick. Davis wasn't anything like LA. I couldn't get used to it. Also, my family is in a financial crunch. That kept me worried while I was at UC Davis. Lastly, my dad was sick. He had a back injury which always got me depressed because he was in horrible pain. When I came back, his condition got worse. Back pains sprung out of nowhere. Luckily, he got a surgery 4 weeks and now he is getting better.

Now that things are getting a bit better, I am thinking to pursue my education. I know for a fact I don't want to be a Chemist. Amazingly, I want to pursue Electrical Engineering. I just love electronics! It keeps me interested. I guess it all started the summer before I went to Davis. I was fixing stuff on my computer, building a project that required electricity... I saw myself doing electricity as a career.

But my grades might destroy my dreams. I did all my community college at Citrus College. I enroll for Fall 2012 to take Calculus II at Citrus. My target schools are CSU LA, CSU Northridge, and CSU Long Beach. I didn't include Cal Poly Pomona because Engineering is an impacted major. At a CC my GPA is 2.96 but UC Davis is 1.56.

The weird thing is, I had applied at CSU LA as a Chemistry major for Fall 2010 and at that time I had a GPA of 2.72.

Please, I beg of you users of College Confidential to give me advice or similar stories.

P.S. I do wonder if CSU will take into account the GPA of UC Davis. I had asked UC Davis if classes transferred over to a CSU and they said. And my courses that I took at UCD were not engineering related based off Welcome to ASSIST

They will want transcripts from all schools attended, I myself was in a similar situation as yourself. I was accepted into CSUN after graduating high school in 2008 after doing very poorly they disqualified me as a student, in 2010. Shortly after I enrolled at LAVC and started my journey once again, today I am on the deans list and maintain a 3.4 GPA. Do not worry everything will be fine just do your best and try not to worry about things so much.

My friend got into engineering at CSUN with a 2.7 for Mechanical Engineering. I think you’ll get in just fine but that school I would say is honestly not going to get you a good job. Especially with your GPA already.

Aren’t you a senior now? I don’t think senior transfers are allowed.

@CalDud: I really don’t worry much the job market after finishing college at CSUN or any CSU. Sure, I won’t have the prestige as I would have if I had graduated from UC Davis but I am willing to work hard in life. I am use to a harsh life any ways. Plus, I have made significant networks at CC, UC Davis, and in my personal life.

Sent from my myTouch4GSlide using CC

It’s good to see that you’ve made connections. Networking is important. I think you’d have a legitimate shot at CSUN. As for mechanical engineering, I think it’s nice. At least, my friend says so. Call them up about your situation I’d say and see what you can make happen.

I had a shot at a UC, but I didn’t take it. At least you were there. It was largely due to finances on my part. Anyway, good luck in your future endeavors. I am confident you will gain admission to at least a handful of the 23 CSU campuses. Electrical Engineering does pay a lot.

CSUs with electrical engineering include: SLO, Pomona, Chico, Fresno, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose.

It appears that all of these have campus impaction, while the * ones have major impaction for at least some engineering majors.

@CalDud: thanks for the support again. Electrical engineering won’t be easy in college but my mind just feels so ready for it. I will contact them and see if I have hope.

@calikid28: Unfortunately, CSULA is the most likely Cal State I have a possibility to go to. Since it is more on my local area, I have a greater admission that CSULB (which will be nice to get admitted to). Lately, I been thinking to apply to Nor Cal Cal States such as Sac State and East Bay.

@ucbalumnus: My interested campus to apply to are LA, CSUN, Sac State, CSULB, and Chico. The other campus you listed for sure I won’t have a shot, despite that Cal Poly Pomona is my local area campus due to my major being impacted.

If you are applying from the Cal Poly Pomona service area even though admissions are competitive there when it comes to CSUs the best thing you can have going for you is being considered an in service area applicant and you should definitely apply there. Since you are coming from UC Davis, Sacramento State might also consider you an in-area applicant so you should send an application there as well.
