Help! I was misled!

I really need your help. So I got the email from CMU stating that I was accepted to CMU. Since my first choice was the School of Computer Science, I was so excited and assumed that I was accepted there. And so I went ahead and enrolled and put my highly expensive enrollment deposit.

Then I get an email from Mr. Steidel that, no, I was not accepted at the SCS, but only WAITLISTED, and got accepted at TSB, and so my enrollment deposit was used to hold my place at the TSB.

If I had knew beforehand that I wasn't outrightly accepted to SCS, I would never have posted my enrollment deposit!!! TSB is very far from my first choice. I could not believe that CMU would deceive me like this.

WHAT SHOULD I DO????

You should have checked your status online for the decisions. CMU only sent out emails about a week after decisions were released. The email has no indication of where you were waitlised or accepted.
Your best bet is to speak to the admissions. No one else could advise you on this, apart from the fact that you should have checked clearly before submitting your deposit.

Oh, God how stupid of me.

I remember the acceptance letter my S received back in 2008 clearly stated what schools/programs he was accepted to. I would hope that wouldn’t have changed.

^ This.

Should’ve also checked online before dropping a bunch of money on something. It’s probable you’ll lose your deposit, but it’s worth it to call the Hub or email undergrad admissions and ask.

There is also the possibility you’ll get off the SCS waitlist. If that happens perhaps they’ll transfer your deposit.

One question though: Seeing as the price for CMU’s deposit is one of the highest out there, why didn’t you take a few days to to come down off the acceptance high and re-read your package to make sure of everything? Don’t want to knock your enthusiasm but that was a bit nutty . . .

you can always come in as tepper student and do CS. Being in Tepper has advantages. It’s not SCS students get super duper preferential treatment.

Could you please elaborate on the advantages and super duper preferential treatment of Tepper students?

You can probably call them and withdraw your enrollment.

That’s actually very unlikely. Nobody has been admitted from the waitlist to SCS in the past years. SCS is just too selective for that to happen.

Call them, tell them you thought you were enrolling in SCS and that you would like your deposit refunded.

I can’t believe that they would keep your money in this circumstance.

I meant to say 'its not “LIKE” SCS students get super duper treatments"

hmm hmm. Well if you are Tepper, Id imagine getting into Business-related courses easier bc you have course reservations… I’m not SCS but I had no trouble taking CS courses

I would also guess that Tepper students get more networking opportunities-- in terms of business related jobs and internship. I’m not too sure so dont trust me too much

If I were in your position, I would just come to Tepper and pick up a CS-related skills on the side. If you were waitlisted to SCS, you obviously have the skills to handle cs courses (or at least admission thinks so)

Come to CMU as a business student and take Concepts of Mathematics (21-127) and Great Theoretical Ideas in Computer Science (15-251). If you do well in these courses, and particularly 15-251, there is an extremely high chance they will let you transfer to CS. Worst case, you could get a minor in CS.
