Help if you have time :)

Hi, I’m a student from Australia and I want to apply to these colleges:

MIT

University of Pennsylvania

University of Michigan

Carnegie Mellon

NYU

UC Berkeley

Im planning on completing a Business degree at one of these schools.

Could someone assess my chances on getting into these universities?!?!

Academics
I am currently in Year 11 over here and will be doing SAT I in June this year and SAT II later next year.

SAT Scores:
SAT I: 2350
SATII:
Maths II: 800
Phsycis: 780

Courses:
Our school system is way different over here, but generally our exam (HSC)are IMO twice as hard as American courses and at least on par with GCSE and IB work.

These are the courses I am taking:
**Advanced English/B

**Economics /B

**Software Design and Development/B

**4 Unit Mathematics/B

**Physics/B

These courses count for 12 Units of work in the australian system, which is the optimal workload for all students. NOTE: These are EXTREMELY difficult and long courses!!!

My school does not offer an overall ranking for students. But there are 180 students in the grade and I have ALWAYS come in the top five at the end of the year and I have subesquently won certificates and awards for that. I probably will become Dux of my school.

My ranks will be either First or in the top 5 in my school for these subjects, and I will come top ten in the country for at least some of them.

I currently hold a full scholarship at the most prestigious school in Australia, to the tune of $50,000 or so.

EC’s

Honors and Awards:
Academic awards relating to end of year class ranking x 3
Prizes and awards for coming first in subjects x 8
Year 10 Science Competition: High Distinction
Won Australian Plan Your Own Enterprise competition
UNSW ProgComp Finalist 07’

Athletic Status:
School Basketball
School Soccer
Martial Arts

Leadership Positions:
President of the Junior Toastmasters Club
Team Leader of the Programming Competition Team

Volunteer/Service Work:
School Social Service Programme - worked in school kitchen and nursing homes
Blood Donor
Work Experience Programme
Planning on doing more Volunteer work…

Others:
Opinions Writing Group
Cadet Corps
Internship at University of Queensland (Worked as a Lab Assistant)

I have a burning passion for technology and finance/biz as evident by my fluency in Java and C++ as well as several inidvidual research tasks relating to stockmarket analysis and companies.

Based on these predicted credentials what are my chances of getting into my desired colleges? How can I improve my chances?

Thanks

You're either boasting or ignorant. You obviously have a chance, so why do you ask?

no need to be rude! She's probably asking because the American university/college admission process is REALLY intimidating and different from other places!! I know that UK, Australian, and Singaporean schooling system is similar to each other, but SOOO different from the American system.

Anyway, I think you have a very good shot at these schools! Emphasize your passions instead of listing everything; for example, I donated blood ONCE, so I wouldn't list that... Maybe you donate blood every month, I don't know, but you get what I'm trying to say, right?

There are SOO many qualified students out there with OUTSTANDING stats just like you, so what sets YOU apart from THEM (other than being Australian, :P)?

Just my humble opinion...

Yea, you do have a chance, but remember that you are an international applicant. Internationals for the most part have crazy good stats (which you do have) to possibly get accepted to an American University...

Thanks guys,

But do I have a decent chance?

Could someone please quantify my chanes in percent?

What would my chances be for HYPS?

HYPS are the toughest to get into--they only accept about 2-3% internationals each year--so competition is really, really fierce.

You have great stats, but even at that, your odds at HYPS is still probably 40% tops. Same applies to MIT and Univ of Penn is maybe 45-50%.

Your odds at Carnegie-Mellon, NYU, and UC Berkeley are much better.
You are probably 55% at CMU, 60% at NYU and around 45-55% at UC Berkeley. The problem at Berkeley is that they also only take about 2-3% international and only 11% OOS, since as the top public California university they are required to focus on admitting the best California students. Your best chance is to apply to major in something besides engineering or business, since they get a ton of internationals and OOS who want to go there for engineering or business. Keep in mind that you can also apply for something like sociology and then apply to the business school later--since the business school actually doesn't start until the junior year--and you have to reapply then anyway.

Best of luck.

"twice as hard as American courses.."

Maybe you mean regular American courses, because I doubt you mean AP courses!

am i really that comptetive compared with other internationals?

btw - i forgot to mention that i helped out organising the World Vision 40 Hour Famine programme in my school.

and im chinese australian :)

bump bump bump

can anyone help?

bump! bump! bump!

would having MENSA on my app help

Hello. I'm an Australian high school student too!
Your SAT I and II scores are impressive, but I've a question about your workload. Are you on an accelerated 4Unit Maths course? Because you dont do 4units maths till year 12. But if it's accelerated, that reflects good on you. As for Advanced English, do you plan to do English Extension 2 in year 12? I recommend you to take the most rigorous workload possible. Because admission staff are quite well acquainted with the Aust education system, and they do know the different [which is huge] between Advanced English and English Extension II. And what's your projected UAI? Any foreign language? The high school I go to has a good history of Ivy and Elite college acceptances, your stats are quite similar to theirs, so you do have a fair shot. But you really do need something to set yourself apart.

yeah, aininor

Im doing 3U, im still in yr11

wat school do you go to?

did those students u were talking about have accelerated courses?

Emphasize that you're top 10 in the country ;).

ok then!

hey, what percentile of students am I in? (in terms of overall college acceptability)
