Hi All,

I'm a Fall 2013 transfer admit.

I took two history courses to satisfy part of IGETC. My CC will only recognize credit for one of the courses and my IGETC is incomplete as a result.

I relied on the IGETC guidelines document from my CC and no where on the form does it say that the transfer credit for these courses may be limited. HOWEVER, it does say on assist.org that the transfer credit may be limited.

I relied on my CC counselor and my CC's IGETC guidelines which clearly conflict with assist.org.

I am going to my CC first thing tomorrow, and then I will go to Berkeley after that. What do you think will happen? I have proof on paper that I was clearly misled by the school. I signed up for an additional class to satisfy IGETC, but that is this summer and I know that Cal doesn't accept IGETC courses in the summer.

Any help that you can give me would be appreciated, thank you.

Wait what…? There are two different kinds of IGETC certifications, The UC one requires you to do a foreign language requirement, the rest of the requirements don’t mention a history class at all.

The CSU IGETC certifications requires two history courses, and does not mention foreign language in it’s requirements at all and since you are going to a UC you don’t need to meet that history requirement.

The only negative thing about not getting your IGETC certified is that you will need to take extra courses (general education classes) at your transferred school.

I think the OP means two history classes that seemingly satisfied IGETC requirements, not the history/government classes required by the CSUs, classes which coincidentally, Cal also requires for graduation. Neither the CSUs nor Cal make this a requirement for transfer, though; you can complete it once you actually transfer.

When the credit for two classes is limited, it’s usually because the two classes are very similar content. Say, two intro to physics classes, one with a lab, and the other without it.

I know Cal explicitly states on the Conditions of Admissions that one must have full IGETC certification, and that they won’t accept a partial one. The first step is talking to your admissions officer.

OH ^ What you said just made sense, I know what you’re talking about now! for example Political Science can count as both a Social Science GE and a History GE but it can only be allowed to be one of them.

I appreciate both of your responses. OpaqueApotheosis has the right idea about my problem.

To clarify. What are you supposed to do when assist says that only 3/6 units will be recognized for both classes, but the IGETC guidelines from the college catalog state that 6/6 units will be recognized? I have proof that there is conflicting information here.

I am going to my CC first to see if this can be fixed, then Berkeley after. I will keep checking this thread on my phone. If anyone has any knowledge about this issue, or has been in a similar situation, please share.

Thank you.

I can tell you that I was scared to death myself before I got my IGETC certified. I feared that something like this would happen – that they would tell me that some random class wasn’t acceptable for IGETC, regardless of what the college catalog said. I was relieved when the certification went through. So good luck getting this resolved.

OpaqueApotheosis - I really appreciate your support.

It took a lot of running around and citing of several different sources, but my IGETC certification is now complete!!

To anyone who is in a similar situation as me: Your college catalog carries just as much weight as Assist.org, but these two sources have info that can conflict. If you are unsure of a class, check both of these sources, and if there is conflicting information, get something in writing from your counselor or admissions office or you will go through a lot of trouble fighting for it after the fact!
