Help!! I'll chance you back!

Hello, guys!

I’m applying to like 20 universities. I am an international student, so what do you think are my chances of getting into:

U Southern California
Boston U
UIUC
UC’s - Berkeley, LA, SB, SD
NYU
Rutgers
U Florida
Ohio State
Cornell
Sciences Po Dual Degree Program - Berkeley and Columbia

Majors- Economics (I know. Very competitive) and possibly International Relations/Global Studies.
ACT - 32 (M- 30 E- 35 R- 34 S- 27)
SAT - 1480 (M- 770 RW- 710)
SAT II- Sucks. Math 1 (690), Literature (620), World History on this Saturday.
GPA - I’m from India. 9.8 CGPA in 9th and 10th. Roughly 85% in 11th and the same in 12th mid-semester exams.
Extracurriculars - State level soccer player, school and state team captain, basketball school team captain, lots of community service, student exchange program at Denmark, Student govt in 10th, Internships at NGO and a company, Silver medals in 2 SOF International English Olympiads
Essays - I feel I’m a decent writer. Not too great and not too shabby.

Any help is appreciated and feel free to be brutally honest!!

@SetuShah10 - international admits to most of the schools you listed are VERY competitive. I am sure you know that already. Your GPA and SAT are high, but perhaps not high enough for the highly selective schools. Also, do you need financial aid?

Hey, we’re applying to some similar schools. The majors you’re going for aren’t crazily competitive, less so than a med or engineering would be.Your ECs look good. I’d say you’ll get in to UCSD and SB, more of a toss-up at USC and LA, Berkeley is probably a reach, as is cornell. I’m not to familiar with the others, but I’d say it looks like a solid list to aply to.I don’t fully undertstand your GPA system, or too much about how international admits work, other than that they tend to be more competetive. do you know what you have on a 4.0 scale?

Good luck!

@MedSciBud: But I do stand a chance of getting accepted into at least a couple of them right?

I’ve also applied to Fordham University, Colby College and Minnesota- Twin Cities as my safeties.

I need financial aid only if the tuition fee is greater than 35-40k, otherwise I don’t.

I’m applying for merit scholarships in all the schools where I can just in case.

Thanks!

@SetuShah10 - I am sure you will get accepted into some of your colleges. Aid / scholarships - I can’t tell. Good luck

@waswaswasnt: Hey! Glad to know we’re applying to similar schools.

I don’t think it’s possible to know my GPA on a 4.0 scale but I’ll elaborate, however.

In 9th and 10th my GPA would be approx 3.93 unweighted (It’s exactly the same for both years). I’ve received A+ in 4 subjects and one A- in Math.

My class rank in 11th and 12th is 1/20 (only Humanities batch, not the entire school)

My GPA would be somewhere around 3.6 unweighted (not sure if this is accurate)

To put things in perspective, it’s harder to score high in 11th and 12th in India (in general, there are exceptions), which is why the 4.0 GPA scale doesn’t really work for Indian students. My school is one of the best in my state, I believe, and nobody at my school has a 4.0 GPA unweighted. Plus there are no AP classes available.

Thanks!

@MACncheez: Thanks bud!

@MedSciBud: Thanks a lot! Appreciate your help.

Ah, ok. I guess colleges will understand that better than I. If that’s the case, then I think my previous comment stands: You’re a pretty good match, from a US standpoint, for all but berkeley, cornell, and columbia, which are more reaches. Good Luck!

You ACT and SAT scores are up to par with most of the schools you listed. I would say you have a really good chance at NYU, Rutgers, and Boston U. A lot of the schools you listed are very high reach. If you did better on the SAT II’s you might have had a slightly better chance at schools like Cornell. If you make a really good essay, you can probably get in to most of your reach schools. Good luck!

@phatphysicist Yeah I know I wish I had worked harder for them. The essays were very stressful but I feel like I’ve done a decent enough job. Thanks a lot.

U Southern California-likely
Boston U- you’ll get in
UIUC-safety
UC’s - Berkeley, LA, SB, SD- you’ll get into SB and probably SD, UCLA and Berkely are reaches as they are very competitive for international students
NYU is also competitive for international students but with that high GPA and SAT score I think you have a solid chance of getting in
Rutgers- safety
U Florida- competitive for internationals but you’ll definitely get in because your SAT score is above their 75th percentile
Ohio State- you’ll get in
Cornell-reach
Sciences Po Dual Degree Program - Berkeley and Columbia- again reaches

Chance back!

@oviandhisbros Thanks a lot! I already got into Rutgers and Fordham (with a $15k scholarship). Now biting my nails for the other decisions.
