Help. I'm an immigrant. I don't know what to do.

Hello, I'm an immigrant. Just arrived here in San Francisco last December. I want to continue studying. What should I do if I want to enter UC berkeley, davis, or santa cruz? I already finished my first year of college back home and I only finished 36 units. By the way my course/major was BS Biology. I really don't know what to do. Please help me. :) thanks.

Go to each schools website and under ‘admission’ check out their requirements. There are tests you probably need to forward the results of and transcripts. If you don’t get an answer from their website, call admissions. They can tell you best the steps to take.

Is it still possible to enroll in fall?

The UCs strongly prefer junior-level transfers; they want you to have completed 60 units and all general education requirements before you enroll at the UC. That means your best course of action right now is to attend a community college for a year. You could start community college in the summer, so that you have two terms of American grades (summer + fall) before you submit your transfer applications.

In any event, the transfer application deadline for the fall semester has passed. The initial application was due on Nov 30. (Grades and supporting documents can be submitted later, up through Jan 31.)

If you do decide to go the community college transfer route, take a look at guaranteed transfer admission agreements between community colleges and certain UC campuses. The program is called TAG.

Depending on your immigration status and your financial resources, you might also consider postponing college for a year. If you live in the state for one year without attending college, you might qualify for in-state tuition rates afterwards. Read up on this too.

You can find information on all of these topics and more here:

So I should enroll in a Community College this summer and fall and then apply for a transfer this november? Will the units that I took from my country be credited? Sorry for my ignorance. haha. It’s really hard for me, to change country in the middle of my college education. T.T

CC is an option that many avail. It is good for two reasons, to raise your gpa especially if your school grades weren’t that great and money. You will save money in CC. However, If I were you I would go to a CC which is closely affiliated with Berkeley, Davis or Santa Cruz. You see some CC’s have an agreement where the university accepts either all or most of their credits. Their students are also admitted in high proportions. So look for that CC and enroll in that to maximize your chances of getting into your favorite university.
Hope it helped.

As an immigrant, are you a permanent resident or do you have a visa (F1, HIB, etc), or no papers?
Because your solution is very different depending on your status.

Go visit the admissions offices at the community colleges and public universities closest to you. They will be able to tell you what you need to do. You are not the only person in this situation.

If you did not already have your previous university records translated and evaluated, you need to get that done. Ask the admissions offices which companies evaluations they will accept. Most will accept evaluations from http://wes.org/
