Can anyone tell me what colleges i can apply to and get in (matches, safeties, anything)? My dads been putting on the impression that i'm not good enough for ANY college..sigh..owell..i'm mainly looking at private universities and good state schools..my dad's like anti community colleges, even tho the TAG program sounds enticing.

I'm a junior at Poway High School, a highly ranked public school in CA. I have a 3.06 GPA, and my practice/mock tests tell me i can get a 1650-1800 on the SAT and a 27-29 on the ACT.
You should consider U of A or ASU. They're pretty easy to get accepted (even for out of state students) and they are great academically especially if you want to major in medicine or are aspiring to become an engineer.

First off, I think you have chances for colleges better than ASU... See college websites, try to keep within the top 70 range http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php, and then check out forums or blogs that correspond to a college that you have relative interest in.

Once you've found your first choice college, go visit it, whether it's Harvard or Georgia Tech, as long as you are interested the "prestige" shouldn't keep you at a set back.

The fact that you are international really does help. However, don't count on that as your ticket.

Colleges aren't simply looking to add diversity, most of them want to add competently conveyed URM's.

However, you are an international student who is taking AP's after being in an american system for just 2-3 years, which is impressive compared to the students who have had long term evaluation.

You'd have NO PROBLEM getting into colleges of YOUR CHOICE if you do your best academically and stick to challenging courseloads (by choice of course).

Also, make your essay stand out. Talk about a positive experience preferably.

thanx to everyone who replied....but i was hoping for more to the point replies...like (college name)-match, etc...i just want to get the most prestigious place i can get to, the highest match for me

Depending on your essay and letters of recs, I'd say you'd be able to get into Princeton, presently the number one school in the nation.

All the top colleges, including Ivies, look for international and/or URM students who display appropriate levels of competence.

I'd say if your essay and letters of reccomendations convey you as a friendly, reliable, and intelligent kid, in a from the heart message, you will have the potential to be accepted at any college.

(Still, keep in mind there are never guarantees in the world of college admissions. There are plenty of deserving, qualified kids who get rejected every year. You need a little bit of luck too ^_^)

sweeeeeet, that was really uplifting :)

Shariq, I think these people just gave you false hope. There is no way Princeton/Harvard will accept you with that GPA. I understand that the premise for this 'false hope' was you being an international. As a Pakistani, I assure, for every top university like princeton yale upenn stanford etc., they get more than 100 applications from pakistan. It's not like they have a dearth of application candidates, some of whom are AMAZING!!

I understand that this sounds very harsh, but hey you wanted reality. On the other hand, I think if you pull up your GPA quickly and involve yourself in some dramas, debates, student government etc. you have a very decent chance at really good schools like Purdue, Northwestern (bit of a reach ), UC Davis/Irvine/Santa Barbara etc etc.

Oh, and PLEASE get any leadership post u can its important. And try not to show the universities your C in O level Islamiat

I agree with Orasool. Princeton and Harvard are unrealistic choices for someone with a 3.0 GPA and test scores in the 1800 range.

That said, I also agree with UChicha that there ARE many very good schools that would be interested in you. You may, however, need to think beyond just "prestige" to "schools where I can get an excellent education and a great start in life."

I also think you are going about your college search backwards. Rather than asking "where can I get in" you should start by asking "what characteristics are most important to me in a college experience." Look beyond just "prestige" -- What do you want in terms of: size of school, location, cost issues, things you'd like to study, social life, etc.

You are also lucky in that you attend a high school that has good college counseling (I would warn you against posting indentifying information like this in the future, however). So, after you have identified what you are looking for in more concrete terms than just "prestige," I would suggest that you go in and ask them for some advice about where students with grades/background/test scores similar to yours have applied in the past. That will give you a good starting point, and you can then add to your list through other sources of research.

I am going to PM you with some other thoughts.
