HELP: I'm transferring but don't have the pre-reqs for my major

I'm transferring to UCSB, but didn't get the major I want, Economics. Instead, I got my second choice, Psychology. I have no intention to major in Psych though. My dilemma is that in order to switch over to Econ, I still need Calc with Analytic Geometry 1 and 2. I will be taking these in the Fall and Winter because they are required to take all Econ classes I need for the major. I basically have to wait 2 quarters to start the Econ major. So other than taking Calculus, what other classes should I be taking? I can't take any Econ courses without Calc 1 and 2.

did you get in as a normal applicant? or TAG?
just curious

I was accepted without TAG, 3.98 GPA. I have 1 semester done of applied Calc, but I much prefer now to take Calc with Analytic Geometry. So I’ll be taking Calc 1 in the fall and Calc 2 in the winter. Which other classes should I be taking since I can’t take Econ courses?

Can anyone suggest what I should do if I can’t take courses for my major? Do I get a minor? I was considering learning a foreign language, but they no longer offer the one I’m interested in.

You could wait one year and apply again with the classes finished. With that GPA, you’d have a really good chances to Berkeley and UCLA as well as all of the other UCs.

First of all, you can enroll in any classes that you want. When you get to school in the fall, look at the classed you need for pre econ and Take them.

You need 1 quarter completed before you can transfer. As soon as you get to school in the fall, go see the econ advisor and talk to them about trsnsfering. He / she will point you down the right path.

Transferring majors is common place. A lot of people do it. I did. I wanted Electrical Engineering but got physics, I transfered to EE after my first quarter, wasn’t a big deal at all.

I had not even taken half of the required courses needed to transfer, but they let me anyway. Now I am finishing up EE requirements and I will start my major coursework fall next year.

Hope that helps

You also have to give some thought to financial aid–I believe they only cover you for 2 years.

@serinety

I am also in electrical engineering.
So youre saying that you finished your Pre reqs at a uc or a jc?

If you transfer without the pre reqs does the uni force you (strongly urge) to finish within two years still?

@LAforlife, I really feel it’s my time to transfer to a university. I couldn’t stand to stay in community college another semester, tbh. I desperately need to develop new social and academic schema. UCSB is actually my #1 choice, so I will be attending there and making the best of it this fall.

@serinety, thank you for sharing your experience. I will do likewise, even if it takes me a little longer to complete my degree. I am happy to see they let you switch over even without all the prereqs. I’ll be talking to an adviser at orientation in August, and probably again in the fall.

I don’t need to worry about financial aid.

@Cyse, on average, transfers take a little more than 2 years to complete their degrees.

I see. Well, best of luck to you. :)
