I’m a community college student who applied for transfer at several top 15 schools. I was unfortunately rejected from all them. However, I was the named the Valedictorian of a well respected NY cc with over 26,000 students after I was rejected. Do you think telling the schools I won valedictorian would make a difference? Should I wait another year to apply or would the result be the same?
No, it won’t. What places did you get into?
Just the suny schools. I was rejected by Cornell, Hopkins, and Penn.
I’m confused. You are number one in the class after your associates degree? Why are you not considering SUNY Binghamton? What was your ACT or SAT?
It won’t make a difference. The schools saw your GPA and knew you were a very strong student at the CC. The top schools take few transfers and getting in from a CC would be very unusual. I would absolutely not wait a year and reapply. If you got into a school like SUNY Binghamton you’ve done very well.
Not great only Penn wanted them, not Jhu nor Cornell.
I didn’t apply to Binghamton, just stony brook and UB. I made a foolish mistake in not applying to schools in between top 15 and top 100. But I’m not in love with the suny system because I want to major in economics and they don’t have one school that stands out. Because of this, I’m considering working full time next year.
If anybody needs more info, I graduated with a 4.0 in 70 credits with an A.A. in liberal arts:social sciences. My ecs are great too. So even though I came from a community college, I wrongly expected to get into at least Jhu or Cornell.
I can understand your reluctance to go to a SUNY. I don’t think Binghamton is better than the other 3 SUNY Centers. They are medium sized public institutions that are efficient, utilitarian and cheap. So you save money and they will get you a degree. If you want a different sort of school there is a list of schools still looking for students and many still offer financial. You may want to seek the assistance of someone at your cc to help with the application as you probably did with your guidance counselor before college. Maybe your essay or some other aspect of your application needs to be changed. Good luck.
I thought Cornell had an arrangement with the CC system?
Have your guidance counselor call, you never will know unless you ask. Also have her call other places that you did not apply on your behalf.
The contract colleges of Cornell have a slight preference for in state transfer students. I called Cornell and told them I won Val. They said that they would have a transfer counselor talk to me and that transfer decisions are still being made, which is weird because I told them I was rejected. However, I doubt they could overturn the decision as they don’t have an official appeals process.
I would think if it counted anywhere that would be at Cornell, instate. I have no data but it seems that those colleges favor the instate CC transfers. I’ve seen articles on instaters getting into Penn and Stanford from the instate cc more. Does you CC adviser, hell the CC president know you didn’t get accepted to Cornell? I would ask your administration to make a call to see if they can gain any insights and see if an application next year would get more attention.
tip: specific titles get more attention than generic ones, i nearly didn’t open this one myself.
If you don’t get the transfer from Cornell, and you really are not excited about the schools you got into, I think working is a good option. Are there schools that accept transfers for spring admit and you can apply in the fall? I have no idea if that is a reality but I’m sure others would have an idea. Best of luck to you.
If I were to work for a whole year, what range of schools would be best for me apply to? Obviously not top 10. Top 30? Top 50?
Like everyone else that is first applying, you need to have safeties, targets and reaches. But only apply to schools that you have an interest in, don’t waste your time applying to schools you won’t go to! Do your research on schools that have good economic programs. Maybe Cornell will end up working out for you. Good luck!
The CC President or someone with a good relationship with Cornell high up in the administration needs to make a phone call. Get their attention. Is there any other weakness in your application that Cornell can point to? Did they take the #2 person? If they have not taken anyone, then definitely get the administration involved. Let them know you are prepared to attend this Fall
Don’t know how much FA is also a consideration but UMich admits a lot of transfers each year and you could apply for Winter term.
The admission rep I talked to suggested I have the president call but it just feels weird. It’s one thing to get in on my own but having someone else get me in feels strange.
Wrong headed thinking. Sorry. A Cornell degree and a year of your life that you would otherwise postpone are worth asking someone that represented to you (indirectly I realize) that if you succeeded you had an excellent chance of transferring to Cornell to MAKE A PHONE CALL. That is all, he is not paying your tuition or adopting you.
If you get in by this YOU have gotten in. Without graduating at the top you would never be in this position to have him make the phone call. He is making it on behalf of the best qualified student. I would question why yoou even have to ask, they should be offering
Consider this your first lesson in persistance and using the resources available to you. Worst case he says no and if he does I would ask why and I would complain. You have already graduated what do you have to lose
